Ensuring the foundation industries can access their skills and talent needs is a central part of UKRI’s Transforming Foundation Industries Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK, EPSRC and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council. Back in 2021, the Challenge, in partnership with the Enterprise Research Centre (UK) reported 40% of foundation industries businesses identified skills and recruitment as a barrier to growth. Fast forward 3 years and businesses are beginning to take action, highlighted in the 2024 Skills Horizon Barometer launched by Skills for Life, in partnership with the British Chambers of Commerce. Two-thirds of small and medium-sized enterprises in UK manufacturing sectors are prioritising technical education, like apprenticeships and work placements, to address skills gaps. Developing the workforce of the future is essential to boost the international competitiveness of the UK foundation industries. With the recent launch of Skills England by the new government, there is a significant opportunity to address the digital skills gap and enhance apprenticeships. According to Digital Europe, more than 60% of EU enterprises face challenges in filling ICT specialist roles, impacting the adoption of crucial technologies like AI, big data, and cloud computing. This gap not only affects the UK but also places Europe at a disadvantage in the global tech landscape. Moreover, a 2017 UK Parliament report revealed that the digital skills shortage was responsible for a £63 billion annual GDP loss. The establishment of Skills England marks a crucial step towards bridging this gap and fostering economic growth.

As a fellow Social Value professional, please join me and take part in Social Mobility Green Skills Week during 4-8 March 2024.   In partnership with The School Outreach Company and the Institute for Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability (ICRS), Social Mobility Green Skills Week will place CR/sustainability professionals and apprentices in classrooms across the country to speak to young people/students. Employers, individual practitioners and apprentices will be connected to schools in social mobility cold spots to deliver a talk about their career, job, skills and qualifications to inspire the next generation. Young people have a burgeoning desire to secure a green job yet lack knowledge and information about the requisite skills and qualifications needed and routes to entry. Furthermore, young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, who are far more likely to be unable to afford a university education, are missing out on securing higher apprenticeship vacancies. 📢 The Business Development Unit (BDU) Marketing team has released the latest edition of the #BusinessBarometer, published in partnership with the British Chambers of Commerce. This annual report finds that longstanding skill challenges continue to impact organisations in various ways. 📍While many employers are responding by offering training and committing to expanding apprenticeship numbers, the report also reveals a lack of strategic planning when it comes to tackling the skills gap. 📈     Only 19% say they have implemented a written skills plan for 2024, while 71% have not.  📉 63% of organisations do not have specific recruitment, retention, or training initiatives for targeted groups such as people with #disabilities or #youngerworkers. It's a compelling read for anyone navigating workforce challenges today. What Should Be on the Skills Agenda for the New Government? As we look towards a new government, the financial services sector faces a crucial question: how can we address the skills challenges that hinder our full potential and broader contributions to society and the economy? We need to streamline reskilling and upskilling processes to prepare a future workforce equipped with both technical and interpersonal skills. With an estimated 160,000 people with a proficiency gap in at least one skill, investing in upskilling and reskilling is imperative for businesses and the economy at large. The Financial Services Skills Commission (FSSC) has released a Call to Action, outlining key recommendations. Last week, we posted on the first of these. For the second of these on a building a highly skilled workforce, we recommend that the new Government should: a) Significantly increase the numbers of people securing high-level qualifications (level 4 and above) especially in critical skills shortage areas such as tech, data, AI and sustainability. Increase the availability of such courses and incentives to attract individuals and businesses to train. b) Introduce flexibilities to the apprenticeship system to increase the amount of training delivered. The UK must rapidly build a highly skilled workforce to maintain competitiveness. c) Enable apprenticeship levy funding to be used for high-level, professional development training and reskilling bootcamps. Utilising existing accredited and industry-supported qualifications and courses aligned to chartered professional qualifications d) Green finance skills: Enable rapid upskilling on green skills by allowing modular and stackable green finance qualifications to be funded via the apprenticeship levy Stay tuned for more insights on our Call to Action.
