10 years ago I wrote my first blog article, focused on the challenges of career development in the tech industry. Recently I decided to reread and reflect on the piece. After the last decade of experience, helping Spotify define its systems, and being a part of the journey for 100s of talented technical folks, I think we have made progress in helping improve the state of the industry. However, through stories like those of Vern Six, who has posted about his journey through ageism in our current state, it's evident we still have work to do to break away from the culture of a career ladder. I've been collecting some additional thoughts which I will post in the next week or so, but I am reposting my original thinking to spur some conversation. The Power of "Did You Make an 🛠️Effort?"   One of the things that caught my 👂attention, as I was listening to the interview of @Daniel Ek, the founder of Spotify, is the powerful question his mother often asked him, "Did you make an effort?"   Compare her attitude with the fact paced & result-oriented culture we live in, with constant focus on 📈results. How often do we judge ourselves and others based solely on the end product? -        Did we get the admission? -       Did we get the promotion? -       Did we win the race? -       Did we land the deal?   It is true, that the outcomes are important, at the same time, the outcome often depend on factors beyond♾️our control. What is truly in our control is the efforts that we make. Consistent, relentless effort is what leads to outstanding and long-term results.   In a world obsessed with results and achievements, Ek's mother reminds🤔 us that the true measure of our worth lies not in what we attain, but in the effort, we put in. The seemingly small shift in perspective resonates deeply with me.   If you too can start focusing on giving your best every time without worrying about the result overtime the same amount of effort will give you compounded✖ results because without realizing, you will have increased your capability and attitude to another level.   So, the next time you face a challenge, remember: It's not just about the outcome. It's about the effort you put in. Ask🙏 yourself, "Did I give it my best shot? Did I learn something along the way? Yesterday, I had the privilege of sitting down with Michael Kim from Spotify🎧 in between his busy event schedule, to discuss how to better nurture the talent and passion of leaders and their teams. Now, I normally stay quiet about the meetings I have; often because I'm discussing sensitive technology projects but more frequently, I prefer the pleasure of 'doing' and 'building' in the background. However, when you come across a voice that is seeking to understand and inspire; who eloquently and passionately shows up in their role walking the walk and talking the talk, something needs to be said. And today, I wanted to give a shout out to Michael. 👏 While we initially connected and discussed our shared experiences building AI HR Tech for job applicant assessments (oh, the challenge of overcoming unconscious bias), our conversation quickly redirected to how we better harness the magic of teams by leveraging AI. Now, I know this isn't a new spin on AI or the future of work, but his interest in dispelling fear around these new technologies and Spotify's support of him doing so is amazing. I wanted to share some thoughts and reflections here: 💡 Michael and I discussed our shared responsibilities as stewards to lead the conversation to where it should go, rather than leave it to default. 🧠 We KNOW that the human mind will hunt for and magnify any hint of threat no matter how big or small (thank you, reticular activating system...for trying to keep us safe ). That 'default' will always feel easier. ⚖️ Everything in life (and business) is a risk. It simply requires the discipline and effort to assess and manage it, rather than dismiss it. 🌟 Greater things happen when we collectively dream of a better future and create contingency plans rather than cowering in fear or being paralyzed into inaction. 🛤️ True leadership takes courage and stepping forward, especially when the path is not paved. 🚀 Companies that are brave enough to explore uncharted waters and innovate are those of the future...but they also need to keep one foot in the present so they know how to bridge the two places. 🌠 As Tony Robbins says, "Where focus goes, energy flows. That's why you need to focus on where you want to go, not on what you fear." 🎧 On my walk today, Spotify queued up Tyla’s hit "Truth or Dare." While the song is about lost love, it resonated differently for me—thinking about my clients and my own professional path. 🏢 Have you ever worked for a company or leader that didn’t value you? Been laid off, pushed out, or even forced to quit? Maybe you left, and people were shocked that you moved on. 💼 Then, did you bounce back to a role that was better aligned with your passions, talents, and goals? With a better title, salary, or opportunity? ❤️ And after you thrived, did that old company, manager, or colleagues start showing interest again? 🙅🏾♀️ It feels empowering to move past what my husband calls "dry begging"—waiting for that validation from a place or person that didn’t recognize your genius. ❓ So, how good are you at: 1.
