What was your worst summer job? I always wanted to be the cool summer camp counselor (Bill Murray in Meatballs) but settled for working alone in a field at a Christmas tree farm. I wore shin pads so my machete wouldn't cut me and heavy boots so if I stepped on a snake it couldn't bite me. There was zero cool in a field and I hope my kids learn the same lessons. 1. Stay in school. Sitting in class learning with your friends is a privilege. 2. Work is not always fun. Bosses are not always fair. 3. 1 HR in a field to buy a Big Mac is not a wise trade. Needs Vs. Wants. 4. The work ethic you develop now will last a lifetime. 5. Offer to do more. Those are the kids who get to 'supervise' next year. If you think snake boots won't help you get into that College, or land that Internship you're wrong. Recruiters like me want to see stability, work ethic, progression, and ambition. Get your kids off the couch, out of the house, and earning valuable experience. Snake boots come in all sizes. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ran a great series on celebrities worst summer jobs. Kevin Hart shares a funny story here (https://lnkd.in/gDC6YdC6)

𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥! While high school can be overwhelming at times, it is also the start of an exciting new chapter in your life. The earlier you start planning ahead and getting into the mindset to succeed, the more enjoyable and stress-free your high school experience can be. Here's a list of some things you can start doing freshman year to prepare you for the next four years of high school…and possibly college. 1. Take a variety of classes to discover what you're good at and what interests you. Take a chance – try something new. 2. Consider Career & Technical Education (CTE). Join a CTE student organization. 3. Appreciate the diversity of your classmates. Learn to work with all types of people. Move out of your comfort zone. 4. Choose a career pathway that matches your interests and skills. 5. Take advantage of extracurricular activities that interest you. Try sports, clubs, music, community, theater, scouts, babysitting, lawn care, photography, etc., to learn new skills, build character, and practice responsibility. 6. Get really, really good at something – anything. 7. Volunteer to work in a job that you think might be a good career match. What you perceive about an occupation is very often different from its reality. 8. Find a summer job that will provide you with more insight into the world of work and how you fit in. 9. Make mindful decisions. Think about the person you want to become and the place you want to fill in this world because you are shaping that person right now.

When I was graduating 14 years ago, the job market was very different. There was an expectation that you graduated and found a full time job as quick as you could. But paediatrics was sought after, and you had to fight for the jobs. Many workplaces only had part time on offer, so you took what you could get. I was lucky enough to go straight into community paediatrics working a 5 day fortnight and when I look back on it... I am so glad that my first few months were part time. I personally needed the time in between work days to organise life and process what had happened the day before. But as I found my feet, I realised that I was quickly becoming ready for full time work, and then when I did become full time, the repetition of working with clients 5 days a week helped me develop my skills and confidence quickly. I think everybody's journey will be different, but having the confidence to honour that and choose your own path (even if it is not exactly what you think society is saying you should do) can be challenging. Maybe full time is perfect for you... maybe a few months off before starting... maybe part time... maybe negotiating some work from home time, particularly if your dream job means you need to travel more... whatever it is, it is important to listen to your gut and go with what feels right, and know that you can change the plan when you feel ready to (although... do any of us feel "ready" for our first day of being an ACTUAL OT after we graduate?)
Are you looking for flexibility in your new grad year? Part time?... or some time working from home? Hear what Stef, one of our OT's, had to say about how he started with RiverRun Pop on over to our website to learn more about our New Graduate program for 2024 https://lnkd.in/gbZhhQGM or apply to join our team now https://lnkd.in/gR4EF-qH

BAS Marketing & Entrepreneurship Graduate at Green River College - Operations Admin at Transfire Logistics
From a career and educational perspective, July was an amazing month for me. I faced some of the busiest weeks of my life to date, balancing the summer quarter for my Marketing & Entrepreneurship program with Green River College, a full-time internship at Enumclaw Expo Center / King County Fair, as well as maintaining some hours at my part-time position at Cold Stone Creamery. I also made a goal to enjoy as much of the beautiful Washington summer as I could by hiking and kayaking. 3 things I learned about time management and being busy this past month: 1. Everything you do should be first priority when you are doing it. I made a point to take everything equally as seriously. I worked to avoid worrying about other tasks while I was in the middle of doing another, in order to give the task at hand my all. 2. When looking for motivation, find empathy for the people you are working for and working with. Looking beyond yourself and seeing who your work is affecting (negatively or positively) will greatly improve your quality of work and motivation. 3. Finding time for yourself is important, but more importantly, is worth the wait. I hear a lot of people talk about work/ life balance and how important it is, I couldn't agree more! However, through the busy month, I knew that I was going to go a long time without having that balance, but once projects started to come to an end, that's when I started taking time to myself.

Great morning for Career Day at Bishop Hartley High School! I joined Zachary Freeman and others to pay it forward by sharing our careers and career paths with these bright students. 8 years in Catholic schools gave me a tremendous foundation for my career and for life. Zach's advice was to focus on what you like to do and are good at. Then don't chase the money. It's not worth it if you dread putting your feet on the ground each morning. That referred to a role before he found investor relations and ADS, of course. My advice is to look at the jobs and internships you've had and your friends and family have and evaluate the Tasks and People aspects. TASKS: - do you like long-term projects, or shorter, quick wins? - do you like predictable workload and a steady routine? or fast-paced and dynamic? PEOPLE: - what's your speed: big groups and group projects, working independently, or one-on-one interactions? - is speaking in front of people your thing? If you were in a play, would you be the lead actress/actor or stage crew handling lighting? - do you like getting to know people and building relationships? That analysis will help guide you toward an enjoyable and fulfilling career and job. Good luck to our high school students as they embark on their career! God Bless!
