A Critical Call to Action: Protecting Transgender Youth ⚠️❗ We’re excited to share an important JAMA Viewpoints article, 'Moving Beyond Statements to Protect Transgender Youth,' co-authored by our amazing advisory board member, Dr. William T. Zempsky. Featured in the August 2024 issue, this article highlights the urgent need for children’s hospitals to take real action to protect the mental health and well-being of transgender and nonbinary youth. The statistics from the Trevor Project’s 2023 US National Survey are staggering: over 50% of transgender and nonbinary youth considered suicide in the past year, and more than 75% reported severe anxiety symptoms. It's clear that action is needed now more than ever. Learn more about the vital steps we must take: https://lnkd.in/ePe8cwZD. Preventing and managing chronic conditions and preventing falls is key to allowing more elders to remain in community as they age. The Administration for Community Living’s Innovation Lab helps achieve that goal by delivering evidence-based programs to communities, especially those that have never had such programming. Boosting this new resource from Rx partners at the Institute for Exceptional Care, who are doing brilliant work that highlights disability as an equity issue in health care and builds actionable solutions for providers who have received little, if any, training in caring for people with disabilities. "The National Roadmap for Disability Inclusive Care is a plan for clinicians to learn how to give the best healthcare possible to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Created by the Action to Build Clinical Confidence and Culture (ABC3) Coalition, the Roadmap included input from people with IDD, their care partners and caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare leaders." https://lnkd.in/eEqSCmUN

This event delved into the impact of non-inclusive research on Equity-deserving communities, highlighted practical aspects of inclusive research & community engagement, and examined the intersectionality of childhood disability and racial identity/ethnicity in Canada. Dr. Bukola Salami, RN, PhD launched our event by emphasizing EDI & an intersectional lens in child health research. Canada's wealth contrasts with child poverty and environmental neglect, prompting the need for inclusive research, community engagement, and an EDI Action Plan. The next session on inclusive research & community engagement from the POPCORN network discussed the importance of commitments to EDI & anti-racism, challenges in health equity training for academics, and the importance of co-designing studies with communities. In the final session, we explored vital aspects including team diversity, respectful engagement, and the impact of intersectionality on child health outcomes. The takeaways were valuable EDI principles, practical tips, and resources for advancing child health equity through research. Don't miss our final session in our series on March 28: Evidence-informed Policy: Advancing health equity for all children. Although I’ve only worked in social care for a few years, I’ve come to understand the profound impact of inclusion and coproduction. Inclusion isn’t just about meeting diversity quotes or ticking Boxes it’s about recognising the inherent value of every individual and harnessing the unique perspectives to drive positive change. Coproduction is more than just a buzzword It’s a philosophy that empowers individuals with lived experiences to become equal partners in decision-making processes. When we embrace coproduction in healthcare and social care settings, we acknowledge that those who receive support are experts in their own lives. Their insights preferences and experiences are invaluable resources that can inform and improve the services we provide. One of the key benefits of coproduction is its ability to foster mutual understanding and empathy. By involving people with learning disabilities in the planning and evaluation of services we gain deeper insight into their needs preferences and challenges. This collaborative approach only leads to more tailored and effective support but also cultivates a sense of trust and respect between people with the learning disability and/or autism and providers. Moreover, coproduction promotes inclusivity and empowerment. When individuals with learning disabilities are given a seat at the table they feel valued, respected, and empowered to actively participate in decisions that affect their lives. This sense of ownership and agency can have a transformative effect on their self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being. But the benefits of coproduction extend beyond individual empowerment, they also have ripple effects that benefit the entire healthcare system. By actively involving experts by experience in the design and delivery of services, we can identify and address systemic barriers and inequalities that may otherwise go unnoticed. This inclusive approach not only leads to more responsive and person centred care but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within our organisations. Brandon Adventurers, Ilhem Berrou, Debbie Moreno-Chamorro and Rachel Roberts have published an article outlining our approach to coproduction and the impact this has made to everyone involved. Please follow the link below to read the abstract (there is a fee to read the entire article) https://lnkd.in/eUMzJF_2
