Incredible news from Google DeepMind. Their AI systems, AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2, have achieved a silver medal standard in solving International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) problems. They did this by fine-tuning a Gemini model to automatically translate natural language problem statements into formal mathematical problems, creating a large library of formal problems of varying difficulty. AI sucks at solving math problems? Not anymore. New generation of AI models trained to solve logical problems is at silver medal Global Math Olypiad level and only one point away from gold. Pretty soon, we will see this new generation of AI models especially trained to solve logical tasks opening doors for an entire new type of use case for AI.

Breakthrough models AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 solve advanced reasoning problems in mathematics

It's pretty interesting to see the progression of AI models. It was once thought that AI would first be utilized in basic tasks and not in creative or advanced logic tasks. But in practice AI has excelled where 1) there is discrete and large quantities of data for training and 2) where formal systems exist that provide structure to a learning process. The former is important for generation, and the latter for search and reinforcement. Formal mathematics falls squarely in the latter category and combined with generative content provides the structure in which to find and reinforce theorem proving policies.
