Artistic Lighting Should Be Everywhere Artistic lighting should be a staple of our public spaces, yet it remains an elusive rarity. This begs the question: why isn't it ubiquitous? When people encounter artistic lighting, their reactions are immediate and visceral: "Whoa, this is beautiful, fun, and interesting." Yet, such encounters are few and far between. The default in most public spaces is harsh, sterile fluorescent lighting, which renders these areas garish and uninviting after dark. It's an omnipresent blight, a testament to our collective failure to prioritize aesthetics. Instead of transforming spaces into vibrant, welcoming environments, we resign ourselves to the norm of stark, ugly illumination. When we do stumble upon a beautifully lit space, the difference is striking. People are drawn in, they linger, and they enjoy themselves. The benefits of such spaces are clear: increased foot traffic, longer stays, and a general uplift in the area's atmosphere. Despite all the rhetoric around nighttime economic revitalization, so many of our spaces remain bleak and unappealing. It's baffling that the answer seems so simple. People don't want to hang out in ugly places. This should be an obvious truth. Is cost the issue? It hardly seems plausible.
