Klyuchevskaya is considered sacred by some indigenous peoples, being viewed by them as the location of the world’s creation. Located almost on the International Date Line, Kamchatka is one of the first places to see the sunrise every day. It is said that when the god Volkov created the world, this was the point at which he held it, and so it remains unfinished, unsealed – hence the volcanic activity.

World Penguin Day yesterday. Emperor Penguins are currently forecast to be near extinct by the turn of the next century (a mere lifetime with today's life expectancy).
One goal in capturing and sharing images is to create space to stop and think about personal choices and business decisions that can impact creatures that inhabited Earth well before humans arrived and well before human consumption patterns started altering ecosystems and the soil, water and air we rely on to thrive and survive. #photography#worldpenguinday

As a society, we often witness the selfless nurturing that animals provide to their young. Whether it's a lioness protecting her cubs, an elephant guiding her calf, or a deer nurturing her fawn, the animal kingdom is full of examples of parental care. However, a crucial aspect of this natural cycle—reciprocal care for aging parents—seems less apparent.
In the human world, the challenges faced by our aging parents are often met with fewer helping hands. This is a concern that resonates deeply with me, and I'm compelled to advocate for more awareness and action.
Research shows that in certain animal species, such as elephants and some primates, there is evidence of younger members supporting older, more vulnerable members of their groups. For instance, in elephant herds, matriarchs—often the oldest female elephants—are protected and assisted by the herd. Similarly, some primate species, including humans, exhibit behaviors where younger generations provide care for the elderly.
Yet, despite these instances, the prevalence of such behavior in the animal kingdom is relatively low compared to the consistent care seen for the young. In human societies, the trend is worrying; many aging parents do not receive the support they need. This isn't just about filial duty; it's about maintaining the essence of humanity and compassion.
I urge everyone to reflect on this and share stories of reciprocal care—both from human experiences and the animal kingdom. Let's spread awareness and foster a culture where caring for our elders becomes as instinctive as nurturing our young.
In the corporate world, HR and managers play similar roles for new joiners, while mentors and support teams fulfill these roles for seasoned professionals.

I should start by saying I have generally been disappointed by my own work with polar bears in Svalbard. This is a giant’s kingdom, and my images from previous trips have been too marginal to do either the giants or their kingdom justice. Luck evens itself out, but nature can seem cruel in its distribution of content, and in this barren archipelago, I don’t recall many favors until June 2017.
There is no doubt in my mind that this photograph of a big male polar bear lends weight to the contention that wildlife photography does not have to be reportage—it can be art. The photograph is elevated rather than weakened by the negative space and the bear’s anonymity. Since 2011, I have spent more than 30 days shooting in Svalbard, and this is my favorite image of a polar bear in this part of the Arctic. Indeed, the more I look at it, the prouder I am. As my fellow Scottish photographer and friend the great Harry Benson once said, “Great images can never be repeated.” Others will decide if this is a great image, but it certainly won’t be repeated.
The distinctive pads on the sole of
his foot immediately grab the eye.
The central pad, which resembles the Nike “swoosh,” is the epicenter of a photograph that owes its differentiating content entirely to this right foot. The image is made complete by its own lack of completeness; the storytelling is started by the camera and finished by the viewer. We are asked to finish the story, not just read it, and the spartan economy of the narrative helps along the way. Less is more in the Arctic. Its beauty is in its simplicity and the enormity of the white detail. It conveys a true sense of place.

Perfect circular patterns
One of the underwater mysteries that once puzzled experts was the discovery of strange drawings in the sand with almost perfect circular patterns found on the seabed off Japan. It took them a decade to find out why they originated and why they suddenly appeared and disappeared until they finally managed to discover it. The author of these amazing formations, almost 2 meters wide, was a newly discovered species of puffer fish measuring no more than 12 centimeters. Subsequent studies determined that they were ornate circles to attract mating partners. Males spend six weeks building these "crop circles" underwater just to mate for a few seconds. To make them, he gathers fine sand in mounds and decorates them with seashells he finds. If he is lucky, the willing female will stand in the center of the circle to indicate approval for mating. If not, the ocean current will carry away his work of art. Nature will never cease to fascinate us.

Raking light photography is an invaluable technique for examining and documenting works of art and archaeological artifacts. As a component of Technical Photography documentation, it reveals surface details that are otherwise difficult to see. This method highlights texture and relief, making it particularly useful for identifying and recording retouching and paint losses in artworks. Additionally, it provides insights into the artist’s technique, clearly showing brushwork and paint layering.
