But today, we're saying it extra loud alongside our partners and we're upping the ante. The Chamber of Mothers "Vote Like a Mother initiative" is a call to vote your values as a mother (father, caregiver), whatever that means to YOU! But that isn't always easy. In fact, we know that this election season is ALOT. LUMO is leading a workshop, in partnership with Bobbie, entitled "Setting Healthy Boundaries for Voting Parents" on October 22nd at 1:00pm ET/10:00am PST where we're transforming political stress into parental empowerment. Election season can be overwhelming, but we're here to help you navigate political discussions with grace and conserve your energy for what truly matters in your life. Remember: You have the power to make your home a low-stress zone during election time. Let's channel that election tension into positive intention! Working + parenting in summer, volume 10. This time of the year takes me by surprise every.single.time. I always assume that once we’re through the gauntlet of testing, performances and celebrations that make up the last weeks of school, things will settle down. Hahaha! I always *forget* that summer is 10 straight weeks of changing routines and schedule Jenga with no settling down in sight. I started last week with an ambitious to do list and spent most of the week struggling to meet my expectations and getting mad when I couldn’t. I wanted to work - I love my work - but I wanted to be available for my daughter too. Y’all can imagine how that worked out. Thank goodness for Sheila Storrer, LICSW, PCC, who talked me off the ledge while I did 37 errands on a Friday evening 🤣 This week I have set REALLY LOW EXPECTATIONS for myself. I’m keeping track of everything I actually do get done as proof - to myself - that I’m not just messing around. And I’m celebrating small wins. (If I finish writing this post I get a mint Oreo.) Today’s win (other than this post) - saying yes to my daughter’s last minute request to go to the pool. Being agile and taking my call from there. Creating a win win by saying yes to her *and* to me. I love graduation season in the USA. It means that summer is approaching in this hemisphere. And, I tend to re-play what it felt like to don my own cap & gown as I left UCSB many moons ago. Mostly though, I love graduation season for the commencement speeches that render us speechless. Every year we get at least one ABSOLUTE RINGER of a reminder of how precious time, connection, & the human experience is. This year's early doozy of an address comes from funny guy Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry's speech (please search it up - I won't add the link here because LinkedIn's algorithm doesn't like links anymore) is short, easy to understand, & inspirational. He wraps rules that should be un-learned into truths we'll all learn on our own terms. And, his advice for leadership, life, & lessons are as impactful as they are simple for all of us - no matter our accolades, titles, or experience. Here are my faves: COOL RULES Jerry reckons the goal is not to make as much money as you can. The goal should be to have the COOLEST (for you). LAUGH MORE Jerry knows that humour is the most powerful, connective, basic, & essential quality you will ever have or need to navigate a creative, human experience. So, learn to laugh - a lot. EMBRACE AWKWARD Jerry tells it like it is - we can all get embarrassed by things we should be proud of and proud of things we should be embarrassed about. Let's flip that script! BECOME > GET I love this one, Jerry is spot on: don’t think about having, think about becoming. STAY CURIOUS Jerry's take that fascination is way better than passion hits the mark. If you long to be fascinating, always stay fascinated. Even through the hard stuff. Yin & yang, baby. Yin & Yang. To all the graduates of Class 24, you did it! Congrats! Breathe in your accomplishment. Feel the PRIDE. And please, for the love of all things good in this world, be gentle with yourself & your journey. Change your mind often. Change your direction. Change you! More than anything: ENJOY THE ADVENTURE. Even if it lasts 100yrs, it'll fly by.
