It was informative to listen to this perspective about how AI is really starting to 'understand" what it's reading and able to draw inferences--which is how we as humans develop as well. The podcast ends with a call for continued regulation and also the need for organizations themselves to consider the risks and impact to their stakeholders and the public. #accelerateinnovation

The Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 podcast is by far the best and most accessible resource for understanding the AI Hype that has taken over popular media. Have AI investments made a profit? No Has AI made a significant technological breakthrough with its language models? No Does AI entail high externalities like labor exploitation, water and energy depletion, and environmental harm? Yes So why all the hype? Venture capital firms continue to distort the media debate and insist on revving up the AI because they have bet a tremendous amount of money on the technology. Those bets are likely to fail, but similar to the coyote who runs off the cliff and continues to be suspended in mid air so long as he does not look down, the entire illusion of AI falls apart the minute VCs are forced to be honest with themselves. Their bets are on AI are irresponsible but they are indicative of a tech sector focused more on innovating for profit than innovating for socially useful technology. Thankfully, climate change is a more pressing and serious global issue than whether a LLM can help you organize your calendar. So, policymakers and investors should shift focus to technologies that lower carbon emissions and help the planet heal after two centuries of ravenous exploitation.
