Let's put aside how freaking great the Gladiator is (my top #3 of all time) and how powerful this scene is. The reason I bring it up is the idea of 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱. There's an inherent tension in the creative process... ...between - pleasing the crowd - and pleasing your-self. If you cater to the crowd, you're a 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗼𝘂𝘁 or a "𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗸" as Steven Pressfield and others called it. You'll, however, become more popular and grow rich-er as a result. (Not always, but it boosts your odds. ) On the other hand, if you just follow your "muse" or artistic intuition, then you'll likely find yourself 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵 but 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗿. As leaders gather in New York for the 78th United Nations General Assembly, they should listen to this epic speech from Al Pacino. Like life, the #GlobalGoals are a game of inches. Ending poverty, reducing inequalities, tackling the climate crisis, empowering women and girls, ensuring clean water and sanitation, building livable cities… The inches we need are everywhere around us.
