I am thrilled to announce that our paper "Automated anomaly detection for categorical data by repurposing a form filling recommender system" has been accepted and published in ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality (JDIQ)! 🎉 A huge thank you to Xiaochen Li, Domenico Bianculli, and Lionel Briand for their contributions, especially their exceptional efforts in addressing the reviewers' comments, which ensured the paper's acceptance after my departure from the University of Luxembourg. This work has been done in collaboration with BGL BNP Paribas (Luxembourg) Data quality is crucial in modern software systems, like data-driven decision support systems. However, data quality is affected by data anomalies, which represent instances that deviate from most of the data. These anomalies affect the reliability and trustworthiness of software systems and may propagate to cause more issues. Our paper presents LAFF-AD, an innovative solution to tackle these challenges, offering consistent results in anomaly detection across categorical datasets. Put a lawyer and computer scientists together and see what they come up with! That's the challenge taken up by Jessica Eynard, researcher at IRIT, University Paul Sabatier Toulouse 3 in France, and the company Huawei based in Munich. For several weeks now and thanks to several secondments funded by the DUCA project, the researchers involved have been working together to deploy and validate a general framework for controlling the use of data, while protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals. Several use cases have been identified, involving various technologies such as artificial intelligence, the cloud or privacy-enhancing technologies. The legal texts that can be mobilized have been identified, and in-depth work is being carried out to ensure that these technologies are deployed in full compliance with the law. This involves studying recent texts (e.g. the Regulation (EU) 2023/2854 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 December 2023 on harmonised rules on fair access to and use of data - Data Act) as well as texts that have not yet been published in the Official Journal of the European Union (e.g. the Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence - Artificial Intelligence Act). This work is therefore still in progress. While it still raises many questions, one thing is certain: the contributions of the two disciplines involved are essential to meeting the societal challenges of our time. The Maastricht University Institute of Data Science is proud to announce the FAccT '24 paper "Automated Transparency: A Legal and Empirical Analysis of the Digital Services Act Transparency Database", led by Rishabh Kaushal, and co-authored by Adriana Iamnitchi, Catalina Goanta, Gerasimos Spanakis, and Jacob van de Kerkhof. The #EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) emphasises, among other obligations, the need for online platforms to reveal their content moderation decisions. These moderation decisions are reported to the public DSA Transparency Database, launched by the European Commission in September 2023. Professor Adriana Iamnitchi: "In our paper, we ask whether the #DSA Transparency Database provides real transparency gains. We used legal and empirical arguments to show that while there are some transparency gains, compliance remains problematic, as the current database structure allows for a lot of discretion from platforms in terms of transparency practices. Grounded on a systematic literature review from the list of premier and other promising IS journals, we found several concerns and issues. Hitherto, there have been no guidelines for IS researchers for the hybrid PLS-SEM-ANN approach. We unlocked the potential of the hybrid PLS-SEM-ANN in providing better insight and understanding for IS researchers. In addition, best practices and recommendations for the adoption of PLS-SEM-ANN are discussed. The study contributes to advancing IS research by conducting a systematic literature review with Biblioshiny apps from the R studio’s Bibliometrix package and then proposing a comprehensive and robust approach to address the duality nature through the linear-nonlinear and compensatory-non-compensatory relationships. We proposed a guideline and suggested the minimum sample size, best practices, and recommendations for reporting the results. We discuss the opportunities and prospects of the hybrid approach.
