Only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are for men. I found Harvard Public Health magazine’s deep dive into Fountain House and its mental health clubhouse fascinating. We refer clients to Fountain House and partner with them to run Community First (which takes a holistic, people-centered approach to working with people who are unhoused). Fountain House has inspired us to deepen our work with clients, ensuring we see and relate to them as full people rather than focusing only on clinical interventions. It was wonderful to learn that the history of their innovative efforts to empower people through the clubhouse model goes back 75 years. Self-determination is a crucial ingredient of their philosophy, as member Aida Mejia points out: “They emphasize the strengths of people with serious mental illness, including the fact that we are capable of making decisions and should have a say in how we are treated.” There’s a lot of good data to show the model works. Among other things, Fountain House members have twice the level of employment compared to others living with serious mental illness and higher educational attainment. The idea that somehow pilots and air traffic controllers can’t be human in their responses to life’s adversity makes no sense. Too many times professional aviators go to work with the best of intentions, but below their best performance wellness capability, because they fear the consequences of seeking normal healthcare. The New Zealand aviation healthcare avoidance study confirms this. Fortunately, in the NZCAA and CASA jurisdiction, the pathway for care and supervision to be able to continue to operate with treatment is well supported. If you are a license holder and are struggling with burnout, stress, depression call the Peer Assistance Network (PAN.org.nz). Many others just like you are great current flyers, stronger for having got help. The answers are with all sectors of the aviation industry. Not only to lower the barriers of healthcare, safer work practices, but also we need to create better aviators who have the trained knowledge, with validated tools and EQ to be able to better determine their state of performance wellness. The chance of being at work and making a critical mistake is too great if we don’t posses the informed self -agency to make the right call on our operational state.
