As multidimensional humanitarian crises continue to unfold in Sudan, Eastern DRC, Haiti, Myanmar, Yemen, the West Bank and Gaza amongst others...this a reminder to my peers to take a moment for self-reflection, to ensure that our actions reinforce the humanitarian principles that should guide us, and challenge the misconception that Global North and Western forces galvanizing new parallel operations around a saviorism complex is the answer. Let us seek ways to only support existing and sprouting grassroots mechanisms and resist the tendency to scale up from afar. "'Big aid' and those new to global engagement continue to overlook, and even discount, the group of grandmothers gathered to plan for how they will get drop-outs back into school, or a cohort of small villages organized to protect a local forest they depend on, or a self-help group that forms a cooperative to get better prices for their goods. Again and again, professional and amateur do-gooders alike mistakenly assume they have to “create” or “build” efforts from scratch."

⚡ UNICEF to finance a water supply project in the Kherson region selected in the DREAM ecosystem 📍The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Vysokopillia village community in the Kherson region agreed to finance a project to repair the water supply network. For the first time, Ukraine's international restoration partner has chosen a project to fund directly through the DREAM ecosystem. 🗨Supporting affected communities is one of UNICEF's priorities. Project openness and transparency and the community's willingness to report publicly on their implementation are critically important. That's why we use the DREAM ecosystem to select projects and monitor their implementation, says Nicolas Osbert, Chief of the WASH Section (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine. 🗨We are grateful to UNICEF for their trust. This cooperation should become another example of DREAM's successful functioning and an impetus for other international partners to take advantage of all the system's capabilities,- says Viktor Nestulia, Head of the DREAM Project Office, Open Contracting Partnership. The project, which is aligned with the Community Recovery and Development Plan, will help restore the centralized water supply and provide the community with quality drinking water. Just came across this insightful article written by Zach Theiler, The New Humanitarian, and it brought to mind the famous French expression, "vouloir le beurre et l'argent du beurre," which translates to "having your cake and eating it too." The piece highlights a critical issue in the humanitarian sector: the overhead funding rules that often starve grassroots NGOs of essential resources. These organisations are the backbone of local communities, driving impactful change from the ground up. Yet, restrictive funding policies leave them struggling to cover basic operational costs, creating a paradox where we expect them to deliver exceptional outcomes with minimal support. It’s time for a paradigm shift in how we allocate resources. By investing more in the operational capacities of these grassroots organisations, we can enable them to be more effective, sustainable, and ultimately, more impactful in their missions. Celebrating Community-Led Development in Haiti: Hon. Michèle Pierre-Louis’ Inspiring Closing Remarks At the recent Haiti Donor Convening, organized by the Inter-American Foundation (IAF) in partnership with the Haiti Development Institute (HDI), Hon. Michèle Pierre-Louis (Founder of FOKAL and former Prime Minister of Haiti) shared insights on fostering sustainable change through community-led development (CLD) in Haiti. Addressing the Convening virtually, Pierre-Louis emphasized the need for meaningful collaboration based on shared values and a deep understanding of local needs. She highlighted that while financial resources are crucial, the core focus should be on empowering communities, especially women’s organizations, youth, and grassroots institutes. This empowerment is key to driving sustainable change. Pierre-Louis called for a shift from short-term aid to long-term support, stressing the resilience of sectors like small-holder farming. She believes these sectors can make significant contributions when adequately supported. Her remarks resonated deeply with the participants and reinforced the convening's objectives: to enhance collaboration between stakeholders, increase support for CLD, and champion the inherent knowledge within Haitian communities. A staggering 363 million people worldwide require humanitarian assistance, 40 per cent of whom are children. UNICEF’s new report, the 4th Social Spending Monitor, highlights significant financing gaps in providing humanitarian assistance. Only 57 per cent of the required aid has been raised, severely impacting delivery of social services like health, education, and social protection. It's time to rethink how to make finance systems risk-informed, resilient, and agile to respond when crises hit, including by bringing together public, private and international humanitarian and climate financing.
