Do you have a vision for how #genomics can transform care for individuals living with mental illness across the lifespan? We want to hear it. Apply now to design and direct the new Translational Genomics for Mental Health program in the Division of Translational Research (DTR) at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The DTR Translational Genomics for Mental Health Program centers on two important considerations in genetic risk for psychiatric disorders: 1) how current and emerging technologies and genomic findings can be translated to clinical questions, 2) how to exploit genetic risk factors to elucidate the biology of underlying mental illness. Genomics approaches and methods range from molecular genetics, human genomics, statistical genetics, transcriptional regulation, and multi-dimensional approaches to phenotypic characterization of mental health populations. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) "Neurofeedback Intervention Development: Opportunities and Challenges" workshop convened researchers and federal officials to review the state of the science for neurofeedback (NF) intervention development for mental disorders, with an emphasis on real time fMRI approaches. The program highlighted recent developments in both early treatment development and later efficacy and effectiveness trials, as well as regulatory issues relevant to the approval and implementation of device-based interventions like NF. Great work. Quiet TMS can also make a valid sham TMS intervention easier to accomplish by reducing one of the ancillary effects of TMS - that of the clicking sound.
Anyone who has come near an operating TMS device knows they are loud. In this study we tried out a quieter TMS coil we had developed, and asked volunteers to compare it to a standard TMS coil, while also measuring the brain EEG response. The quiet coil design markedly reduced the perceived loudness and auditory activation of the brain while matching the stimulation efficiency (motor threshold) of the commercial coil. For example, the quiet coil at 100% of its motor threshold sounded like the conventional TMS coil at 34% of its motor threshold. Reduction of the TMS noise can in turn mitigate annoyance, auditory evoked brain co-activation, necessity of earplugs, need for sound masking, obstacles to communication with the subjects during TMS procedures, and tolerability in patient populations sensitive to sound. Thus, quiet TMS coils could positively impact a range of research and clinical applications of TMS. #TMS #EEG
