“We don’t get things like this in our town very often so we’re very excited.” - Karen W., long-time Lockney, TX resident In the fall of 2022, the only grocery store in Lockney, TX closed its doors and left residents without local access to groceries and fresh food. Fast forward to present day and you’ll find community members shopping at the new DG Market for fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, bread, eggs and more. Learn how DG’s team collaborated with local customers and community leaders to bring fresh, healthy food options to this small, rural town: https://lnkd.in/gPGncbu2

Cannot stop thinking about the Detroit People's Food Co-op since I first learned about it. An except from the Facebook post that enlightened me: "What is a food coop? A food co-op is a grocery store that’s owned by its member/owners as opposed to a grocery store such as Kroger or Meijer which has corporate ownership or an independent grocery store owned by a family or individual. In a food co-op members have a role in shaping the store culture, operations, and product standards. Detroit People’s Food Co-op is democratically controlled by its member/owners. Each member/owner can only purchase one ownership share and has one vote. Although food co-ops, like all businesses, must have revenues that exceed operating costs if they are to be sustainable, food co-ops prioritize community well-being over making profits for member/owners." https://lnkd.in/e3epEDRi

It started with a seed of an idea. For years, I had wanted to do a cooking class at my local farmer's market as a way to demonstrate a creative way of diverting food waste. However, this required certain licensing that I just didn't have. When I proposed the idea to my current host site, they encouraged me to ask the farmer's market if it was possible. Unfortunately, they weren't allowing new vendors/tablers and definitely not anyone doing a cooking demo. So I tried a new tactic. I reached out to some people in my community and decided to put on a cooking class at a local community center. I purchased all the ingredients and set up times to practice the recipe at the center. This was especially challenging as I didn't have access to a car. This cooking class series - Cooking with Scraps - was not funded by grants. It wasn't a program my host site already had in place. I didn't get a heap of donations or anything like that at all. I just reached out to people my amazing mentor, Patrizia Hironimus, connected me with, got my food handler's certificate and started to take action on my vision. It was a lot to work out, logistically, but I have now run 3 successful Cooking with Scraps workshops on my own. More recently, after I announced my second Cooking with Scraps workshop at a networking event, a person from the community who works at CalFresh came to me and wanted to collaborate. She said her work and my work aligned really well and wanted to assist me in this program. That I started. From scratch. So I said yes. I am deeply grateful for all this support! So whilst I'm not doing my farmer's market demos like I wanted to, my dream has taken a new direction - bringing cooking skills and kitchen safety to people living in temporary housing. Ever since I toured a local temporary housing shelter in Chico (CHAT's Everhart Village), I knew I wanted to do a workshop there. With support from CalFresh and a whole lot of perseverance, that's now possible. The workshop is on Friday and we'll be making carrot top pesto and having a pizza party! I am telling this story so as to inspire others to pursue their dreams (even if it's "just a workshop" or you don't have funding for it right now). Do things that matter to you, that are close to your heart. Know that there is a way. (And eat more veggies!) #inspiration #truestory
