October is Islamic Heritage Month, a special opportunity for communities to learn about, celebrate, and explore the diverse and rich histories and cultures of Muslims with all of their intersectional identities and experiences. I am often conflicted about commemorating a specific “month” to acknowledge a particular community or human rights issue since it is so important to keep learning and growing and appreciating the diverse histories and contributions of marginalized communities throughout the year, and to not place limits on this…but I recognize the intention to highlight and spotlight communities during specific times of the year and the positive impact that this has for us all in bringing our awareness to communities that we may be neglecting to consider or connect with or learn about. So I invite you to take time this month to learn, grow, celebrate and support Muslim communities in solidarity. It is valuable to learn about heritage but it is even more valuable to educate ourselves about the oppressions and barriers and harms that Muslim communities continue to face every day, and how non-Muslim communities can be better allies and co-conspirators in ongoing resistance against injustice and oppression. Check out resources such as the Muslim Legal Support Centre (MLSC), South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO), and the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW). All organizations doing amazing work to support their communities! https://lnkd.in/g2qrP3Gn
