Today, we celebrate First-Gen Day, embracing being the first in our families to walk into the world of college and beyond. Being first-gen means being self-reliant, a trait that has shaped my work ethic and approach to challenges. One of the most rewarding realizations has been that as first-gen students, we have the power to forge our own paths. There's an immense sense of pride in being the first in the family to step into the world of higher education. It's a reminder that our stories are not only about personal achievement but also about breaking barriers that past generations were not able to. To my fellow first-gen college students, here's a piece of advice from my time: don't hesitate to ask for help. We're all in this together, and there's an abundance of support available. No one in higher education wants to see you fail—especially at my alma mater OPSU. Embrace the learning process, seek guidance, and remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Here's to celebrating the strength, resilience, and triumphs of all first-gen students!

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? It's about who you are and where you have come from to get where you are today. A time to share and celebrate the Hispanic/Latino heritage with friends and family by enjoying the traditions, cuisine, culture, and music. What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career? That dreams don't work unless you do. What is a recipe, food or snack that reminds you the most of your home, culture or heritage? Street tacos (steak, soft corn tortillas, cilantro, onions, lime, and guacamole). What can you and your fellow teammates do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? Encourage others to learn about Hispanic/Latino culture. Explore the music and dancing, attend events specific to the culture, shop at local Hispanic shops around their area, and enjoy some Hispanic cuisine.
