What do you think an interested, engaged candidate looks like across the interview table? James Cleves of CleverVA shares an important message for hiring managers: address your biases around eye contact 👀 "So many of us are taught that in an interview it’s important to maintain eye contact – and that body language is important. But for some of us Neurodivergents, we find that really hard. It can be incredibly stressful and uncomfortable and could set off an anxiety attack. By avoiding eye contact, they’re not being rude and they’re not uninterested in the interview! They’re engaging and keeping themselves regulated in the moment." Discover how virtual assistance services offer essential flexibility and support for both clients and candidates in the Neurodivergent community, and how James is inspiring others with his story, his learnings and his tailored support! What type of interviewer are you? There are 4 styles... Which one are you? The podcast breaks our styles into 4 primary groups: 1. Charmer - Want to be liked 2. Challenger - Want to be heard 3. Examiner - Get it Right 4. Harmonizer - Want to adapt I love this episode as it breaks it down as to what type of an interviewer you might be and how this is so valuable to learn (for both interviewee and the interviewer). I have seen the lack of awareness of this has led to several misunderstandings and inappropriate "judgements" on both sides - the interviewee or the interviewer. This seems to be very similar to "DISC" profiles. Thank you Steven Simpson for sharing this with me. Have you seen or experienced such difference in styles? Do you see yourself as one of these? #interviews #yourinterviewstyle

The interview process can be tricky to navigate. You want to ensure you find the right person for your opening while at the same time wanting to create an environment where all candidates feel valued. As a result, we tend to do things throughout the process that we think are helping but can lead to poor results. That’s why one of the top interview tips is to stop trying to help the candidate! How are you trying to help the candidate throughout the interview? By explaining your interview question before they even have the opportunity to think of their answer. You feel like you are helping the candidate, and in some ways, you are, but not in the way you think. You’re actually helping the candidate hide the whole truth. In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, we dive into this interview tip and show how zipping your lips can produce better results. I should probably stop sharing how mediocre I perform when I’m the one being interviewed for a job 🤦🏻♂️ But this is why I empathize with job seekers struggling with the interview process. It can be so challenging to stay engaged when talking about yourself… over and over again. And then, so many interview processes feel like never-ending quizzes. They’re draining. I can’t begin to count the times I’ve had to remind a hiring manager that a candidate they liked wasn’t the most qualified for the job, but they were simply better at interviewing than other candidates. I’m someone who’d much rather show than tell. This is why I like exercises. It’s a more direct opportunity to demonstrate your impact and discuss your approach with the hiring team. That said, I also strongly advocate paying candidates for their time completing exercises. The volume of work required deserves it. And recruiting teams need to adjust their entire hiring process if exercises are being introduced. The exercise should be the foundation for all conversations. Let the exercise guide your follow-ups, deep dives, and behaviour-based questions. Don’t treat exercises as a “bonus” that get discussed in passing and only during one stage. That’s unfair to job seekers, and it’s not effective for your process, either.
