🌍 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺? In 2023 and 2024, the plight of displaced peoples persisted, driven by various factors. The reality is troubling—many actors influence migration, but accountability is scarce. 👥 National states, civil society organisations, and local policies all shape the treatment and experiences of migrants. ☑️ Understanding these dynamics is vital for addressing the challenges of forced migration and striving for more equitable solutions. 📖 Dive deeper with Chapter 4️⃣ of the 2024-25 #ResearchAgenda: https://loom.ly/6zocraQ ✍️ By Stephanie Acker --- European University Institute Migration Policy Centre

IMISCOE 2025 CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: People who migrate are not first and foremost ‘migrants’, and those who seek to migrate are much more than ‘potential migrants’. The New South Institute works on government and public policy. We are not simply a research institute and policy advisory - though we are excellent at that. We believe in building democracies and capable governments.
Research findings on African migration governance by the New South Institute’s (NSI) Migration Governance Reform Project (MIGRA) reveal new patterns and realities as well as dispelling long-held myths and prejudices about migration in Africa.

Irregular migration remains one of the most formidable challenges confronting even the most advanced and powerful nations globally, writes Walid Ellafi. Despite ongoing international initiatives, substantial resources dedicated to addressing this issue, and significant advancements in technology designed to combat migration, it persists unabated. Statistics indicate a significant surge in levels of irregular migration over the past decade, despite considerable technological progress and a robust political will to tackle this phenomenon. #EUToday #Migration #MigrantCrisis

New research published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences highlights the need for new policies to manage migration in order to maximize sustainability and minimize involuntary displacement. The studies show that well-managed migration can be a transformative force, bringing energy and ideas that boost economies and contribute to the green transition. However, poorly managed migration can deepen inequality and increase environmental damage. The research emphasizes the importance of considering the impacts of migration on both the places people leave behind and the places they go to.

How do stories about migration and migrants shape political discourse and policy decisions? Christina Boswell and I analyse how narratives on migration shape and are deployed in political debate and policymaking in six European countries in the latest comparative report from the #EUFunded #H2020 @BRIDGES_Mig project. We investigate how political actors processed salient narratives on migration during the 2015 'migration crisis' and the #Ukrainiancrisis of 2022 and how they informed #policy. Also, discover the findings from the individual countries #Germany, #France, #Spain, #Italy, #Hungary and the #UK: https://bit.ly/3wdDexC

New article out in European Policy Analysis! Martina Abisso, Eugenio Cusumano and I integrate framing into narrative analysis and employ the Narrative Policy Framework to examine the portrayal of EU actors and institutions in Southern European media coverage of irregular migration. Italian, Maltese, and Spanish newspapers are consistent in providing a negative frame of European actors, represented as unsolidary and ineffective. We also find that more liberal outlets give greater prominence to the humanitarian externalities of the EU's dysfunctional migration governance, albeit to a lower extent than expected. Conservative outlets more frequently criticize the EU at large, as well as its alleged hegemons, while liberal-leaning outlets are more likely to specifically blame those actors opposing the redistribution of asylum seekers among member states. Overall, Southern European media portray a bleak picture of irregular migration governance, where European actors are mainly represented as villains and weaklings, protagonists of stories of decline, change-is-only-an-illusion stories, and stories of stymied progress. Our findings suggest that media outlets have played a pivotal role in borrowing and amplifying politicians' and decision-makers' tendency to shift blame onto the EU level, as well as in fueling Euroscepticism across Southern European member states.
