For this month's Fourth Economy blog, I wrote about major sporting events, their economic impacts, and how cities can, with the right priorities, leverage these events to drive long-term investment and community prosperity. These events don't happen without negative externalities, though, and can swiftly become burdens for host communities, their budgets, and local constituents. I'm excited to head to the USMNT game vs Panama in Atlanta tonight and get an early look at how the city will fare with massive World Cup crowds in 2 years time! "This year’s Copa America is equal parts competition and trial-run. The big event, 2026’s FIFA World Cup jointly-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, looms ahead just two years from now. Host cities are already making short and long-term investments in their infrastructure to maximize the tournament’s economic impact, which is estimated at over $5b across the 3 countries." https://lnkd.in/gxDNFCPC

Have you ever wondered how 48 hours can impact an entire industry? This year's #WFSEurope in Sevilla was a great demonstration of just that as we welcomed some of the best leaders, businesses, football properties, media, and start-ups the sports industry has to offer. Some key lessons I took from the event based on my personal experience: 1. The magic of real-life exchanges remains irreplaceable, even in our tech-driven era. Brief, in-person chats have an unparalleled impact on forming lasting relationships. Just being able to have a 5-minute conversation, to extend a handshake or even a friendly hug, is a huge difference maker. 2. Sustainability and innovative revenue streams are at the forefront of the football industry's agenda. My involvement in a workshop with the SportBoost team and discussions with industry pioneers confirmed this commitment. 3. The significant role of football, and sports, in boosting tourism and economic growth was evident. After all, sports tourism shapes 8-10% of global tourism. This was another key finding from a workshop we helped set up with Carlos Canto and the team at SPSG Consulting. 4. Is your objective to create, capture, or accelerate demand? Clear goals are crucial when attending conferences. Those who understand them, win. 5. I was lucky enough to interview some game-changers pushing the industry forward. Their passion for the industry, to professionalize it and take it to the cutting edge of technology and innovation is what most stood out to me. 6. The call for more diverse leadership is undeniable. There are so many brilliant minds out there that it is a pity we are not taking advantage of the talent that wants to develop their career in the industry. It's not only about doing the right thing; diversity is good for business. Overall, there is an inspiring commitment to excellence, innovation, and sustainability (economic, social, and environmental) that will surely elevate the football industry to new levels! A big thanks to all of you whom I was able to meet during the event, and the entire World Football Summit team and its collaborators for making it happen! The 2026 World Cup is set to come with some BIG changes. And some may be better than others... The World Cup is arguably the marquee event in football and potentially sport as a whole, with each iteration sparking a myriad of conversations around not just football but culture, politics and society in general. This tournament we’re likely going to see a lot of focus on the changes that have been made to the format… ➡️ 48 teams (over the usual 32) will now compete. ➡️ The number of games will almost double from 64 to 104 ➡️ Hosting will take place across 3 different countries and 16 host cities (Mexico, USA and Canada) to accommodate the infrastructure required. ➡️ Host cities have been grouped geographically to aid travel time for fans and teams ➡️ Teams will have 3 days between each game ➡️ The top 2 from 12 groups of 4 will still progress however the 8 best 3rd place teams will now proceed for a 32-team knockout round. These changes are setting up 2026 to be the biggest World Cup to date, but I’ve got no doubt the next couple of years we’re going to see a lot of predictions about what these changes will mean for the game The main question being…is bigger better? It will be interesting to see what the impact is for teams, fans and organisers. We’ve seen format changes before, could this be the next evolution of the tournament? Or is this the final straw for organizers, clubs and players?

Once in a while I'll start what I think will be a simple, short trivia post and then it becomes an obsessively detailed article. When you're watching the Olympics *exactly* 100 days from now, and you're like, "How do they sort the countries in that parade?" you'll now have a solid resource to refer to! https://lnkd.in/eG4kug8u

#GenovaBurns Of Counsel #WilliamHellerEsq. featured in recent ROI-NJ article, "2026 #WorldCup: Why (and how) #MeadowlandsChamber is playing lead role for businesses looking to capitalize" "The possibilities seemingly are endless. If you follow the rules. That was the key message from William Heller of Genova Burns LLC. Few know the significant details that come along with #trademarkenforcement as well as Heller, who not only was witness to a Super Bowl in New Jersey but the NFL’s efforts to expand into Europe." "Different countries — and different companies — have different legal understandings of how things should be done. Knowing the rules of engagement ahead of time is key, Heller said." "In the coming months, FIFA will release more information on the rules and regulations around what comes with being an official sponsor of the event." "Meadowlands Chamber, with specialists such as Heller, will continue to have meetings to discuss the dos and don’ts moving forward." #FIFA #Meadowlands #WorldCupNJ #NowYouKnow https://lnkd.in/guV7Z5vK

https://lnkd.in/gTUgJeMn As a grief coach, I am not surprised that the author of this grief informed post is from a woman. For far too long, sport has rewarded a stoic and emotionless approach to loss. More needs to be done to understand grief and loss in sport and for those interested in learning more, I touch on this throughout my book Grief Unleashed. Curious to learn more, visit my website griefunleashed.ca or sport.ca where I offer lots of insight into a more holistic approach to loss in sport. #sportlaw #griefunleashed

Sporting Edge Founder > Former England Cricketer > Keynote Speaker > Senior Leadership Coach > Apple top 10 Podcast > Inspiring Webinars
The truth is - Spain were the best team in the whole tournament - we only created mercurial moments. But let’s be clear Gareth isn’t boring – his tenure has been brilliant. He is one of the most successful managers England has had. Under his leadership, England has reached the quarter-finals in the last four major tournaments, including the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020. So aside from the emotion – here are his stats Total Matches Managed: 100 Wins: 60 Draws: 23 Losses: 17 Beyond his successful stats, he’s mentored a generation of talent for 10 years. They have become respected role models and represent our diverse nation. He’s created one of the strongest team bonds around while only having access to them for 40 days per year. In that window, he’s built a culture of trust, nurture, challenge and dare I say it love! The ‘outside’ world can be brutal, judgemental and sometimes unrealistic. They want people to defend and attack perfectly, be disciplined and show flare, be consummate pros and media darlings. Inside this team they felt safe, and valued. Gareth hasn’t been boring – he’s been a consistent shield, protecting his emerging talent from the ravages. He’s taken the flak so that they can thrive. He won't be everyone's favourite as his strengths are consistency, integrity and stability. But in times of turbulence, these attributes could be amazing for our leaders in schools, businesses and even politics. Spain won every game and create a record four titles. They excited and entertained and that's what sport should do. As for England's players – they didn't fully express themselves and ultimately couldn't pull it off. Gareth will choose when it's time, but whenever that is, his foundation will allow another coach to come in and unlock the creativity and exuberance the team need to dominate on the global stage. So it's not coming home. It’s the hope that kills you. #SPAENG #Football #Euros2024 #mindset

1moThanks for sharing, Ross! As an avid soccer fan I found this to be a great read. Interested and excited to see the short and long-term economic impacts similar investments will have here in New Orleans with the upcoming Super Bowl.
