Labor Day was created in the 19th century, first organized by labor activists in the 1880s, followed by a smattering of states creating holidays, and culminating in Congress passing a bill to create a national holiday in 1894. At that time, the average workweek was in excess of 100 hours, at least six and often seven days per week, at physically demanding and often dangerous jobs. Labor's Day's purpose is to recognize how American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known - this is true whether you're a line worker, management, or an entrepreneur. While Labor Day today is more about cookouts and end-of-summer sales than labor activism, it's worth remembering how far we have come. The labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker. As a coach, I've witnessed many individuals' extraordinary efforts and resilience. Today, we honor our accomplishments and relentless pursuit of excellence. Did You Know: Labor Day, a tribute to American workers, has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. It became a federal holiday in 1894, but the roots of Labor Day grew out of violent clashes between labor and police during the Haymarket Riot in 1886 when thousands of workers in Chicago took to the streets to demand an eight-hour workday. * The first Labor Day parade occurred in New York City in 1882. * Labor Day was declared a national holiday in 1894 and is observed on the first Monday in September.
