Appreciation post! Sara from Optimus Prosthetics is the most patient human on the planet. She casted me exactly one month ago. One week later, the test socket was ready. However, it felt tight in a couple places. She did her best to make more room and then sent me home to wear it for a while. But, it still felt tight. So someone from the office drove to my house to pick it up, and delivered it back a couple days later with the changes just to save me 2 hours round trip. I don’t have that amount of extra time in my day when I’m training like this and working almost full time, so it was a huge blessing! However, the leg was now tight all over- like feel my heartbeat in my leg kind of tight. It didn’t make any sense. She was making it bigger, but it felt smaller! I took off work today to go get remeasured. It turns out my stump has gained volume by over 1 centimeter in about a 5 inch area in the middle…in just ONE month. Thats a good and terrible thing all at once. It means I’m getting stronger, and my training is paying off, but it means Sara had to get really creative today. She had the brilliant plan to recast just the middle of my leg in fiberglass, then put the test socket through the new cast, heat it up, and push it out until it matched up to the exact form of the new cast. It worked perfectly! I was able to leave it with her to finish out, and it will be done in 2 weeks! I just hope it still fits by then because of how much muscle I’m gaining in such a short time. 😬🤞🏻 And when I tried to drive to a park and walk for 30 minutes to see if it fit well, I discovered that the back of the socket was catching on my car seat while driving, which is really dangerous. The team at Optimus figured out that by changing the angle of my seat, it fixed everything. Talk about troubleshooting! To sum everything up- 1. fitting prosthetics is HARD! (Way harder than people probably imagine). 2. Sara isn’t put off by a challenge- thank God! 3. Accessibility for military and civilians The direct cost of war is tens of thousands of people with disabilities, including mobility impairments, visual or auditory impairments, and psychological trauma. Ensuring that people with disabilities resulting from war have access to and use a wide variety of products and services is the least that society can do for them. Here are some considerations to keep in mind: Recognition of the Particular Deficits: Starting with gaining a grasp of the types and severity of disabilities resulting from war-related injuries, which can include sensory impairments (blindness, deafness), psychological impairments (PTSD, anxiety), and physical disabilities (paralysis, amputations, etc.). Users and Experts Engagement. Close collaboration with people who have suffered from disabilities due to war and specialists in adjacent sectors, e.g., rehabilitative medicine, to acquire an understanding of the difficulties encountered and possible solutions. Physical Accessibility. Evaluation of physical spaces, infrastructure, and transportation to ensure they are wheelchair-accessible and have accommodations for people with other mobility impairments. Communication Accessibility. Considering various communication methods and tools to accommodate those with speech or hearing impairments. This could include text-to-speech software or communication boards. Mental Health Support. Recognition of the importance of mental health support and accessible mental health services to address the psychological impacts of war-related impairments. User-Centered Design. Incorporation of principles of universal design, where possible, to create products and environments that are accessible and usable by the widest range of users. Encouraging feedback from users with impairments and their caregivers, including regular updates and adaptations of solutions to better meet their evolving needs, will emphasise the challenges and experiences of these individuals and can help in creating more effective solutions.
