Recently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force updated its recommendation regarding the age at which women should begin breast cancer screenings. The recommendation now urges all women to start screening at age 40. This is a significant stride towards proactive healthcare and early detection! #BreastCancerAwareness #EarlyDetectionSavesLives https://lnkd.in/e4Uzqyxf

GUIDELINE UPDATE! We are pleased that the USPSTF has finally recommended all women start screening at age 40! We celebrate this progress in alignment with other medical body breast screening recommendations. We still advocate for risk assessment for all women because we know that women do not all have the same risk of developing breast cancer! geneType's risk assessment tools cater to a broad population of women, whether or not they have a family history of breast cancer. They incorporate known risk factors that may include common genetic variants in the form of polygenic risk, lifestyle, and clinical features such as breast density. #KnowYourRisk #breastcancer #breastcancerscreening #womenshealth https://lnkd.in/e4Uzqyxf

This October, we raise awareness for Breast Cancer and the importance of early detection. The good news is that today we have less deaths from breast cancer. The bad news is the number of diagnosis have risen every year with the steepest rise in women under 50. There are also major racial disparities in outcomes. Take a minute and read this article. Excellent article with quotes from several academicians on the importance of women obtaining an assessment of their risk for developing breast cancer. Olivia Munn was recently diagnosed and she shares her story to help other women. See your doctor to determine your risk. If it is calculated at 20 % or higher you may qualify for evaluation with MRI. #oliviamunn #riskassessment #breastcancerawareness #screeningsaveslives #breastcancer #breastmri

The United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) officially updated breast cancer screening guidelines. They now recommend breast cancer screening (via mammogram) every other year starting at age 40 instead of 50. While often we, as PCPs, have been offering mammograms starting at 40 for some time, this is big news because it changes the standard of care. Using evidence-based guidelines helps prevent and diagnose cancer and ultimately saves lives. When we recommend screening outside of the evidence-based guidelines, we inadvertently contribute to higher numbers of false positives that can lead to unnecessary follow up imaging and procedures. Now we can wholeheartedly recommend mammograms to all women starting at 40 knowing the evidence backs this decision, and we will be saving lives by doing it.

In new recommendations, US preventive services task force #USPSTF reduces the age for biennial #breastcancer screening from 50 years to 40 years. New recommendations can avert 1.5 deaths from breast cancer per 1000 women. The impact on reducing the inequality may be minimal: Black women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer beyond stage I than other racial and ethnic groups, are more likely to be diagnosed with triple-negative cancers (ie, estrogen receptor–negative [ER–], progesterone receptor–negative [PR–], and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative [HER2–]), which are more aggressive tumors. An improvement across the spectrum of breast cancer screening and treatment is needed to reduce this gap.

Please take a moment to read about my thoughts on new Canadian guidelines for breast cancer screening
"I understand the burdens of the medical system and the mass amounts of pressure provided by modernity; but we need to draw light to the fact that underrepresented women need our support. During the most frightening time of a woman’s life, the pillar she should feel the safest within should be the medical system." - Quinn Obrigewitch, MSc., board member at the Canadian Breast Cancer Network https://lnkd.in/eJEEeUfp

Fact Friday! Women should get mammograms starting at age 40 and continue breast cancer screening every other year through age 74, according to the latest recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Previously, the task force recommended women start mammograms at 50, and for women ages 40-49 to talk with their provider about when they should start screening based on their personal risk. The new recommendations also call for more research to further understand health disparities in screening and treatment and what more should be done for women with dense breasts. https://lnkd.in/eed6TqDk

📈 Alarming rise in breast cancer rates among younger women, particularly Black women! 📕 A study sheds light on a concerning trend: breast cancer diagnoses in women under 50 have been steadily increasing for the past 20 years, with a sharp jump after 2016. 💡 The study highlights several key findings: 🏥 The increase is primarily driven by estrogen-receptor positive tumors. 🚑 Black women are disproportionately affected, facing a higher risk than white women, especially at younger ages. 🔴 Early detection is crucial for successful breast cancer treatment. 📄The only way to finish this post is by giving a shout-out to some of my favourite companies who are working tirelessly to support this cause: ScreenPoint Medical, Vara, Kheiron Medical and iCAD. If there are any others that I may have missed out or may not be aware off, drop them in the comments! #Medicalimaging #Medicalimagingnews #breastcancer
