The term "human side of finance" probably sounds paradoxical to most— but not to Jeffrey Kyles CPA CGMA. In fact, Jeff's commitment to "sharing the story behind the numbers" for relevance, relatability, and understanding is just one reason why he is so greatly respected as a Lewis leader and business executive. In Lewis' latest Leadership in Action series, Jeff discusses finance, family, football (as a player and professional ref!), and the importance of being present to win. Check out his inspiring story!
For us here at Lewis, “Must be present to win” is a Leadership in Action principle we strive to put into practice every day. What does this principle mean? For Jeffrey Kyles CPA CGMA Vice President of Finance, it’s all about purposeful presence. As a finance leader, Jeff doesn’t just generate figures and stats—he tells the story behind the numbers so that the information is accessible, understandable, and relatable. He doesn’t simply delegate work to his team—he works with them to find the best solutions to any challenges they are facing. And he doesn’t talk at his team—he actively encourages everyone to share their perspectives and experiences because he knows diversity of thought is vital to the success of any team. His deep commitment to being fully present is rooted in his upbringing and evident in his professional and personal life. We recently sat down with Jeff to talk about how he’s integrated the “Must be present to win” principle into his leadership style, as well as where he draws inspiration from and his commitment to helping others succeed. What I learned from leaving a position years ago has stuck with me and made me a better leader in the process. Here’s the story. Earlier in my career, I reported to the VP of Finance at one of the largest family-owned companies in the US. When I decided to leave this position, the VP tried to get me to stay and offered me incentives so that I wouldn’t take a new position. However, I had already made up my mind and chose to leave. Although my boss at the time didn’t agree with my decision… in fact, he thought I was making a mistake… he was so gracious. (To this day, we’re still friends and meet for lunch!) What I learned from this experience is that even when I see people making decisions that I don’t necessarily agree with, I don’t have to take them personally. At the end of the day, the decisions other people make for their lives aren’t about you. As a leader, your job is to be there for your team members and give them your honest advice. However, it’s okay if they make decisions that you don’t agree with. You can still be there for them and support them through their decisions. Have you faced a similar situation in your career? Share your story in the comments below. #leadership #accountingandaccountants #smallbusiness #business #success

What if your accounting team (for lack of a better word) sucks? Don’t blame your accounting team… focus on your leadership. Make sure you aren’t using low-cost resources who lack experience. If you hire a great controller, you can often train your current team to handle finance tasks better. Investing in quality talent at management and leadership levels is key to experiencing a thriving team overall. 👉 Need a strong CFO to lead the finance and growth initiatives for your company?
