The Toronto region is choking on growth with a population that has grown significantly over the past 25 years, without the needed infrastructure to keep pace. Fortunately, governments are investing significantly and the Toronto region is on the cusp of a transportation revolution, with more than $80-billion in transit capital projects underway. It's the largest transit infrastructure build in North America, which comes with historic opportunities and also some formidable challenges. To better understand how we can get our region moving, we spoke with Karla Avis-Birch, Chief Planning Officer Metrolinx about how we’re going to get around our region in the future. Today marks a monumental milestone with the opening of the City Section on the Sydney Metro—Australia’s largest public transport project to date. This achievement is the culmination of the efforts of thousands, bringing the vision of a interconnected city to life. Such transformative infrastructure is only possible with long-term planning and strategic funding. Over the past 15 years, the privatisation of infrastructure in NSW has enabled governments to reinvest capital into new services, driving growth and enhancing the quality of life for future generations. We stand on the shoulders of past leaders who laid the groundwork for today’s successes. The question now is: What legacy will we leave for tomorrow’s visionaries? Let’s aim to build a future that will make us all proud.

With projected population growth in our region of 200,000 by 2054, we need to plan now for that growth. So it's great to see this major milestone in the Ōtaki to North Levin (O2NL) expressway; https://lnkd.in/gaxkwVT4 Ō2NL will enable shorter safer connectivity for those travelling within and though Kāpiti and Horowhenua, with up to 15-minute travel time savings for trips from Ōtaki to north of Levin, and six minutes for trips from Ōtaki to Levin. Wellington Regional Leadership Committee has long advocated for the need for investment in transport infrastructure for our region, including in the recently completed and regionally-endorsed Future Development Strategy, which includes O2NL as a key strategic transport project for the region (page 51): https://lnkd.in/gU7gPWQw

It would be difficult to celebrate our 70th anniversary without recognizing the single most important transformation in Gateway's history - our strategic decision to become a Project Focused Organization (PFO). The term PFO was first introduced to our President Emeritus, Daniel S. Deiseroth, P.E., when attending a seminar on the philosophy. It was there that Dan met Bob Maxman, an industry professional providing management consultant and support services to architectural, engineering and construction firms. With Bob's guidance, Gateway adopted the PFO structure and hired Mike Zavoina in 1998 as its CEO. The transformation from a traditional, department-based organization to a project focused organization ensured that client projects were always the main focal point of the business. Happy to see WSP in Canada continue to play an important role in advancing many of the critical transit investments in Canada's major cities. As Corina Moore states, the Ontario Line subway represents a generational improvement to the transit network in Toronto, expanding and strengthening connections to subway, rail and bus systems. As the deliberations end and we await the arrival of Cohort 2 of the Clean Futures programme – and so the range of exciting innovations their new SMEs will bring to the rail sector – we reflect on where the sector is at the moment in terms of the challenges and opportunities it faces and so, most importantly, the track it’s on.   In mid-July our Strategic Business Partnerships Manager delivered a talk to the Rail Industry Association (RIA) North’s Light Rail Member Interest Group in West Yorkshire on the business case specifically for very light rail… core to BCIMO’s mission in our home at the Very Light Rail National Innovation Centre. With the rail’s re-emergence as a cleaner, greener form of transport in the face of climate change, and innovative potential across all aspects of the sector, there is a clear vision being defined within the UK for multi-modal, low-carbon end-to-end services of which VLR is part.   As an even more financially and environmentally sustainable solution, with a range of significant technological advancements, the VLR niche is now differentiating in terms of innovative sustainable infrastructure and vehicle design.
