Guess how many other applicants are vying for the same job as you! We navigate an exceedingly competitive landscape, making it crucial to set yourself apart. During my master's program, while applying for a full-time role or internships, I often crafted a case study relevant to the company I was applying to and submitted it alongside my application. Below is an example I developed for a Marketing/Brand role at Amazon Warehouses. While this approach may not be as effective for larger companies with multiple screening processes before the hiring manager reviews applications, it can work well for smaller firms. It provides an opportunity to stand out among other candidates. Admittedly, it's not feasible to invest this level of effort and time for every application, but it's certainly worthwhile for roles you are genuinely passionate about. This method proves to be a more meaningful use of your time compared to submitting countless applications for various roles. It not only creates a platform for the company to understand you better but also helps you in gaining a deeper understanding of them. In fact, one of these case studies helped me secure internships at Greenhouse, and several others landing interviews. You can check them out here: https://lnkd.in/g-7MPSWU

8 months, 78 applications, 60 rejections, and 1 internship. Here's a rapid-fire list of my top five lessons from the Summer 2024 Internship cycle: ✅ Volume > Everything. Securing an offer is a numbers game. In a world of applicant tracking systems and automated online assessments, you can't put all your eggs in one basket. ✅ Start early. Don't self-select out of an opportunity because you didn't know you missed the deadline. I began applying for 2024 internships in July 2023. ✅ Compile a list of companies and roles that are a good fit for your long-term goals. Focusing early will save you headaches down the road. Narrow down your "why" so that if you get an interview, you can clearly articulate how the experience is right for you. If you do this, the right opportunity is obvious when it presents itself. ✅ Tailor your resumé to the position you're applying for. I wish I had done this sooner. You can swap out experiences from your CV and tweak your bullet points to the roles you're applying for. Late in the game, I created a PM/finance version and a marketing/business development version of my resumé. ✅ Increase your luck surface area. You can't control how lucky you are, but you can control how many chances you get to be lucky. Do that side project. Go to office hours. Attend that club. Case in point: I was referred to my marketing internship at Amazon by a recruiter who managed my application for a sales role I was rejected from. I got lucky by having a resumé with unique experiences that helped me stand out from other candidates. Special thanks to Katy Wirissa, my recruiter at Amazon. I can't wait to spend my summer in Arlington, VA, at HQ2!

Internships are a vital pathway for students to gain full-time employment after graduating from college. As such they need to be informed about the availability and timing of openings at companies in the future they may be interested in joining. Posting of internships follow an annual cycle as seen in the chart produced by Candogram Inc.. Internship postings peak around mid-year in the summer then decline toward the end of the year before rising again. Students should prioritize their internship searches in the fall when opportunities are most abundant. This year’s cycle began in July, one month earlier than previous cycles. The chart shows historical availability of internships in the New York City metro area. At the end of September there are more opportunities for students than last year. This is the perfect time to explore internships with companies such as CVS, Merk, Deloitte, Walgreens, NBCUniversal, Amazon, Goldman Sachs and many others. College students who have completed internships are more likely to be hired compared to those who haven’t. “As supported by NACE research, on average, companies offer 72% of their interns full-time employment.” [Link to the article below] This also highlights the trend of employers hiring candidates through personal connections rather than just relying on resumes. This trend may grow as more students turn to artificial intelligence for resume writing, which streamlines the process, but also makes it more challenging for employers to identify standout candidates. With more internships leading to full-time positions, there may be a decreased number of entry-level job postings. Students with internship experience are not only more competitive but also have double the chance of securing a permanent role. https://lnkd.in/eFHZubBJ By Xin Yi He Cen #jobmarket #hiringtrends #students #college #highschool

Today, I had the pleasure of attending the Amazon Campus Summer Series Event! This invite-only event specifically designed for students and recent graduates provided unique insights into Amazon’s culture, career opportunities and a chance to network with current employees. Alongside the extremely helpful tips on the application process, what I found interesting was hearing about the daily working lives of panelists Rebecca Bellis, Giacomo Miotto and Carmen Ercoreca Alexis and their diverse journeys into securing a role at Amazon. Most importantly of all, I have come to understand that any experience, whether big or small, is useful in the enhancement of transferable skills. 💡 Interview Tips: Be prepared but don’t overprepare. Being authentically yourself is far more valuable than having a several scripted responses. After all, an interview is merely a two-way formal conversation to find the right fit for both you and Amazon. Looking forward to fast-tracking my application for Amazon’s 2025 Internships and Placements! A big thanks to Sophie Neely and Amazon for the invitation to such an insightful event. The positive and supportive atmosphere has left me feeling motivated and more confident in taking the right steps to securing future opportunities! #AmazonSummerSeries #Amazon #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalDevelopment #Networking #Internships #StudentOpportunities

"The best candidates are the ones who can bring learnings from any career path and apply them in creative ways in a new environment." I resonate with this deeply. In the hiring world, we get so caught up in people's resumes being cookie-cutter that we lose sight of the person behind the paper. I'd rather hire someone with a hunger to learn and grow than someone who only meets the buzzwords or education I'm looking for. Applying for jobs was so challenging for me when I started in my career. I always thought "If they just met me!" but sometimes candidates don't even get that chance. The people who stoke their best transferable skills are the ones who will beat out cookie-cutter resumes when it comes to interviews. Wishing all my friends who are looking for jobs the BEST of luck! Know your value! #hiring #marketing #jobs
"Those are internships, they don't count!" A hiring manager told me this during a first-round interview screen. They were referring to my Apple and Microsoft experience on my resume. It was tough to hear at first, especially when I was sure I wouldn't move forward to the next round. I was still searching for my first full-time job at the time. And even though I felt heartbroken, I didn't let it affect my confidence. I later found people who found those experiences to be valuable. Don't let anyone tell you that your previous experiences aren't valid. The best candidates are the ones who can bring learnings from any career path and apply them in creative ways in a new environment.

Internships should be counted. That's where you start your journey of learning and development. It's like a baby needs to have all the nourishment, care and learning till the age of 5, so that he can start walking on his own feet. The same applies for Internships.. #internships #internshipjourney #internshipexperience

Thank you for your vulnerability in sharing your experiences and resulting insights. Seeking validation from others can dilute the authenticity of our experiences. True fulfillment comes from within, grounded in self-awareness and confidence. Embrace your journey, celebrate your achievements, and trust in your worth. 🚀 Embracing Different Experiences for Success 🌐 I recently read a post that really resonated with me. Someone shared a tough time they had in a job interview. The hiring manager didn't think much of their internships at Apple and Microsoft, saying, "Those are just internships, they don't matter!" I understand how it feels to be shocked and disappointed by a comment like that. It's tough when your important experiences seem to be ignored. I went through something similar early in my career, and it taught me an important lesson: never let others downplay the value of what you've done before. The truth is, internships teach you a lot that people might not realise. The skills and insights you gain from internships at big companies like Apple and Microsoft are really valuable. I've found that these experiences not only make you better at your job but also help you be more adaptable, creative, and good at working with others. To all the folks trying to build their careers, remember this: Your journey is yours alone, and every step you take helps you grow. Don't let anyone belittle what you've done before. Instead, use those experiences to stand out. The best candidates are the ones who can use what they've learned in different ways in new situations. Let's celebrate the strength that comes from having lots of different experiences. Share your stories, support others, and always remember that your path is made up of important lessons that shape who you are professionally. 🌟#CareerJourney #ProfessionalGrowth #DiverseExperiences #CareerAdvice

In my professional journey, I've had moments of uncertainty about the importance of my early experiences. But, I've grown to see and value the richness that diverse backgrounds bring. The most important lesson I've gained from this is learn how to embrace the richness of your personal journey, staying strong and resilient even when you have to face the comparisons and comments that could potentially affect your confidence. Reminding yourself that your journey and path is unique and holds immense value even if you can't see it at the moment.
