What does it mean to celebrate the little wins? In part, it means celebrate the steps along the way and celebrating taking deliberate initiative. Which is why I'm showing you the photo below, a preliminary stage in a longer project, something that the final project won't show. I'm taking the opportunity to practice hand sewing by whip-stitching the edges of this fabric before washing & ironing it and then turning it into applique. The stitching is just to prevent the raw edges from tangling and won't be part of the final project. This might seem like a huge waste of time, since I could do this on my sewing machine far more easily and quickly. To be sure, I'm not a fast hand sewer, so this is a big investment of time just to prep the fabric. Here's the thing, though: this is time well spent on developing a skill that I want to improve. This is the PERFECT opportunity to practice, since no one will see the result, but the work is necessary. And, for a practice piece, look at how even those stitches are, especially on the gold fabric! I am, as the Brits say, chuffed. How do you celebrate the little wins?

Immediately after I shared all the information about LPP with Stewart, he called Vlad over to share what he learned and as he put it, “how easy it is to sell LPP” in knowing this information. And he’s not done yet! He’s excited to bring it up during huddles and the next Specialty Spotlight to ensure the entire team knows. It’s the confidence for me! It’s been 30 years since I joined the print and packaging industry. In that time, I’ve realised I don’t think I’ve ever really shared my experience from the beginning to where I am now. My journey began in a family business owned by the great-grandsons of the legendary author JRR Tolkien. Then, in 1995, I started at what is now Smurfit Kappa Mold in the ink department before becoming the Print Development Team Leader. After that, I suppose you could say that I “fell” into sales and have spent the last 20 years selling corrugated cardboard. (Know anyone who needs any? Send them my way 😉) For the last 13 years, I have been at Smurfit Kappa Markham Vale and this is where you can find me today. Two enlightening articles by Addison Del Mastro (X/Twitter: @ad_mastro). The first one, the Weight Of History (https://lnkd.in/eAVS2R-K), deals with the reason behind the gradual disappearance of free-to-use weight scales at Publix Supermarkets: "The manufacturer, Mettler Toledo, quit producing the scales in 2015. The scales have been a fixture in the stores since George Jenkins opened his first Publix supermarket in Winter Haven in 1940. And while Publix posted that “our wonderful repair shop keeps our remaining machines in great shape,” there will come a time when they will no longer be able to be repaired and will be pulled from store floors (...) Industrially produced products aren’t artisan crafts. They only work at a certain scale, where knowhow and staffing and factory tooling ultimately produces profit. Too small a market for too complex a product makes that product effectively impossible to make, at least according to economic logic. It’s weird to realize that things with real cultural and human meaning nonetheless rely on the raw logic of time and money. Maybe everything does. The newest Publix stores now lack the scales from the very beginning." Meanwhile, the second article comments on the steady reduction of choice when trying to buy a small car in the US today. April 30, 1952 - The day that will live in celebration of potatoes everywhere Before this day in April 1952, toy promotion was relegated to the boring medium of newspapers, magazines, catalogs and radio (yes, radio!) But on April 30, 1952 toy maker Hasbro took a plunge into the American airwaves and became the first company to advertise toys on television by showcasing the now venerable Mr. Potato Head. To anchor its nascent toy business, Hasbro acquired the rights to this timeless spud from inventor and designer George Lerner for a mere $5,000 (which in 2024 dollars would purchase about 8,000 lbs. of potatoes - a useless fact you can share at your next family gathering). The original package did not actually contain a solanum tuberosum (the scientific name for potato and another useless fact). Rather it contained 30 plastic accessories, including facial features, hands, and feet, which could be affixed to any real potato or similar vegetable. Imagine the squeals of delight as kids assembled this monstrosity of a toy using real produce. Hopefully, you were never the recipient of these vegetables for dinner after the kids played with them (Insert a collective “ewwww” here). The initial advertisements were aimed at parents, not children – because, well, parents have the money. Fast forward 72 years and the media is now crowded with shameless targeted advertising to children for everything from Play-Doh slime to Winifred the Squishmallo. So next time you are served a potato in any of its acceptable prepared forms to be eaten, be thankful that Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head have their own plastic head as a base for eyes, ears, and mouth and not a starchy plant tuber handled by an imaginative child.
