Another major milestone in the challenge: The team have now crossed the Mid-Atlantic Ridge! 💪 • The Mid-Atlantic ridge is the largest mountain range on the planet, and it's almost entirely underwater! 🤿 • The mountain range is an astonishing 1000-1500 km wide, rises a full 3 km above the ocean floor, runs from the Arctic, to the Antarctic, and has a giant trench running along it's centre. 🤯 • Where the team are, this trench is the boundary between the African continental plate and the North American continental plate! 😯 • The Atlantic ocean actually grows 2.5cm per year - and the source of that growth is this trench moving further apart. Sharing a reconciliation glimmer - this is what we need more of 🌟 I was really inspired to see Nobel Prize-winning scientist John Clauser set an example of what real reconciliation in action can look like. Clauser shared that he feels the land acknowledgements at the events he often attends are performative, and they don't do anything to stop Indigenous children from having to drink unsafe water. After winning the award, Clauser chose to do something truly impactful by donating half his prize money to a charity that partners closely with and is guided by Indigenous peoples and communities - Water First Education & Training Inc. And here’s the best part: this donation goes directly toward building capacity for First Nations to manage their own water systems, it is not an imposed solution or a short-term fix, but genuine support that respects Indigenous knowledge and autonomy. This is exactly the kind of commitment we need more of: not just words, but real, tangible action that uplifts communities on their own terms. One of the reasons we see a decline in high school students registering for #geosciences can be attributed to a need for more awareness about the field, misconceptions about career prospects, and a growing emphasis on technology-related subjects. Many students may not realize the diverse opportunities geology offers, from environmental to energy resources. To encourage them, outreach efforts should focus on showcasing the real-world impact of #geology through hands-on activities, field trips, and career talks by professionals. Programs like GEO-REx, organized by Boone Pickens School of Geology , provide immersive geoscience experiences and can be instrumental in sparking student's interest and helping them see the critical role #geoscientists play in addressing #globalchallenges. #Pleasesupport #Geoscience #Geology #Outreach
