How can we invest in women to accelerate progress? "Women’s progress in development has long been affected by unfavorable policies, coupled with domestic gender roles that keep them out of the public arena, where most of the development discussions and opportunities are presented. Maternal mortality rates are disproportionately higher among women with disabilities due to various factors, including limited access to healthcare, inadequate support services, and discrimination. Studies reveal that women with disabilities are at least twice as likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth compared to women without disabilities. Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach that includes ensuring equal access to maternal healthcare, providing appropriate accommodations, and promoting awareness about the specific needs of this population. What is better than feminist candy for #womensday2024? What about… ➡️ Closing the pay gap ➡️ Eliminating pregnancy/motherhood discrimination  ➡️ Ensuring female representation in all levels of management  ➡️ Calling out sexist comments and behaviors in the work place (and everywhere, really…) Tomorrow is a reminder that we are not there yet, and whereas you might not be able to close the pay gap yourself, what about making sure every woman in your next meeting gets so share her opinion? It's International Women's Day, and traditionally much of the discourse on this day is about asking society to treat women the same way it treats men. While this is an admirable goal in many contexts, it is equally important for us to invest in systems and mindsets that elevate women from positions of health disadvantage. What are we talking about? We are talking about policies, practices, and mindsets that support: ✅ safe access to contraception, and high quality information about contraception. ✅ safe access to pregnancy termination, because abortion is health care. ✅ safe access to high quality antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care - both physical and mental. ✅ breastfeeding education and support. ✅ adequate paid maternity leave. ✅ facilities and time for breastfeeding mums to continue to breastfeed or pump milk after returning to work. Leveling the playing field involves building systems to elevate the unwittingly and unintentionally disadvantaged.
