In a recent interview with Diane Brady at Fortune, I shared my decision to switch from accounting to sales and how I knew it wouldn't be easy. I had no sales experience, but I was determined to make it happen. I began by reaching out to a contact and asked about a sales position. On the first Monday I contacted him he apologized for not having an open position and suggested that I check back the following week. So, I did. Every Monday for an entire year. Every Monday, I asked him if he had an opening and every time he said the same thing. Most people would have given up after a few rejections, but I was committed to making this career change happen. It was tough, facing rejection week after week, and while I grew discouraged, I kept going, believing that eventually something would give. I had hope...that is until the day I called up and was informed that my contact had retired. I was devastated. Then, to my surprise, the next Monday, I was invited to meet my contact’s replacement and was hired on the spot. I asked him why he would hire me without knowing me. He reached into a drawer and pulled out a stack of memos with my name. They were the memos left from a year of me calling and following up every Monday. He said, "Someone this persistent is worth hiring." That experience taught me so much about persistence and developing a thick skin. That year was the best training I could have had for my career. In sales, you'll face rejection - a lot of it. But if you can learn to push through that, to keep going even when it feels like you're not making progress, that's when the real opportunities open up. Those lessons have stayed with me from sales rep to CEO positions. Remember, in sales and life, it's not about never facing rejection—it's about how you handle that rejection and keep moving forward. Nailed it Peter McKay. Goals, persistence, navigating thru rejection, grinding...it's hard to teach that stuff but when you see it you definitely hire that person!
Bravo Peter McKay
