ME: I'm sorry, but the nurse accepted another offer Director: What? You said we were their first choice ME: Yes, you were Director: Then how did we lose this great nurse? ME: You put the nurse through a 6-week interview process. Another company offered the nurse the job after 2 interviews within 1 week. STRONG nurses get hired quickly. Before you come at me, yes, I did warn them! This would have been such a great match for both the company and the nurse, but instead it was a painful lesson learned. The happy ending is.... We did work together on tightening up their interview process and found another great nurse to join their team. This time, there was NO delay in the offer!! If you DON’T move fast, another company WILL.

Not-Mom, and what she taught me about bias: When I was in nursing school, I had a professor who looked exactly like my mom. So much that I had to consciously remind myself that she was not my mom. I would expect her to act like my mom would and it would throw me off completely when she didn't. Now, you might not have enough of a relationship with most college professors for this to matter. But, in nursing school, we were together for many hours in clinical rotations. She taught me how to use an IV pump, and chart in a medical record. This was shocking! My actual mom struggles with technology. I taught her how to send a text message over and over for about 5 years before she felt comfortable with it. (My absolutely wonderful mom has many other talents.) In order to remind myself they were different, I started calling her Not-Mom in my head. I mentioned it to a classmate, who picked it up. Other classmates did too, and suddenly, Not-Mom was her name! (She was fully aware of this and got a good chuckle.) Ironically, Not-Mom herself taught us about the psychologic concept of transference in class. That's when you react to someone in a certain way because they remind you of someone. Ahem. Bias can be about race, religion, gender, social class, and more. But, it can also come through in subtle ways in almost every human interaction you have. This article I wrote for Relias and Nurse Talent Acquisition With Nurse.com talks about bias, its pervasiveness, and how to leave it behind to hire based on merit and skills. (See if you can spot Not-Mom in it... 😉 ) #healthcarecareers #healthcareleadership #b2bmarketing with the fabulous Zelda Meeker https://lnkd.in/gf33SxaZ

Are you preparing for a nursing interview? Here are a few tips to help you shine: 1. Research the organization: Understand their values, culture, and the type of care they provide. Tailor your responses to align with their mission. 2. Know your clinical skills: Be ready to discuss key nursing competencies, such as patient care, medication administration, and critical thinking in complex situations. 3. Prepare for behavioral questions: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to showcase your problem-solving and teamwork abilities. 4. Ask insightful questions: Show your interest by asking about patient-to-nurse ratios, opportunities for professional development, and the team culture. 5. Practice self-care: The day before, get a good night’s sleep and maintain a positive mindset. Confidence is key! Good luck! 🩺 #NursingInterview #NurseCareer #NursingProfession #HealthcareJobs #InterviewTips #NurseLife #JobSearch #CareerDevelopment #NursingCommunity

You made it to the end of the week! Your dedication to nailing your nursing interview is inspiring and we are excited to see how you change lives in your community. We have one final piece of advice for you…🩺 Another favorite interview question for nurses is about conflict resolution. Hiring teams want to know how you navigate challenging situations with patients, patients’ families, or coworkers. Share examples of your cool head and calm presence even in high-stress situations. If you don’t have any nursing examples, use examples from other jobs or your family. The key point is to have your answer concise and ready to avoid the risk of nervously rambling on too long.

University / New Grad Nurse Recruiter at Froedtert 💙 Resourceful Employment Matchmaker with a Passion for Positively Impacting Lives of College Students
Feedback Friday I am often asked what to wear to an interview with a Hiring Leader. The expression “dress for the job you want” continues to be tried and true. For nurses, especially New Grad Nurses or Nursing Students, I highly recommend wearing scrubs. By wearing scrubs, you will be prepared for any potential job shadows. At Froedtert Health, we tend to incorporate job shadows during the onsite interview as it provides an opportunity for the candidate to learn more about the unit, converse with potential peers, and become that much more immersed in the day-to-day activity - presenting candidates a more engaging opportunity to decide if that unit could be a good fit for them. Ask me how you can join the Froedtert Health Team and #BeHere

Nurses! How often do people ask how your day/week is, and you reply “surviving”, “getting there”, “same old same old”, “the usual”, or sarcastically, “living the dream”!! Let’s not just accept that we need to just plod on and “survive” in our careers. Often, this response comes from feeling unfulfilled in your current position, knowing you want a change, but also feeling overwhelmed with the process of actually getting there. Chat with me about how to get you out of the “surviving” rut, to THRIVING in the career you love! annette@thrivenursecoaching.com
