All the inspiration you need this Monday afternoon! Paragon One is now Extern, so follow our new LinkedIn page to stay in the know.

When people ask me about an origin story for Extern, I think back to my first job at Morgan Stanley. 🏦 I landed a perennially-coveted role of graduates as an investment banking analyst. 📈 Then a serious case of tendonitis took over and, overnight, I couldn’t type anymore. Doctors and therapists couldn’t help, other than to tell me to lay off typing.  I was convinced my career was over (because what good is an analyst who can’t type, right?). 🤕 Life has taught many lessons since then (i.e. problems rarely represent the existential crises we assign them), but I’m always grateful for what that particular setback revealed. While I recovered, my Vice President had the clever idea of asking me to coach and mentor the summer interns. The interns were green and everyone was far too busy to help them fix busted spreadsheets. I finally had a use! And the interns had a full-time analyst with nothing else to do but sit next to them, make their Excel model formulas flow, and make sure the footnotes were correct before their pitch books had to go up the chain of command. 📁 Most interns and entry level employees don’t have access to an employee or manager who has nothing else to do but instruct, coach, and mentor.  And since the interns eventually operated at the level of an analyst with a year of experience, ALL interns mentored got offers to come back full time, a rare occurrence. ↩ ❓The ROI for companies to support young talent with employee resources on real work projects regularly comes into question.  I write more about why busy employees cannot support student upskilling on real work experiences at a greater scale than today in Part 3 of “The Case for Inventing a New Form of Work Experience: the Externship” 👇 👉 https://lnkd.in/dXuBdwMP 👈 🔎 At Extern, we've studied these roadblocks through our work with numerous leaders and employees from Fortune 1000’s to startups.  The insights we've developed working alongside project managers over the years led to the creation of a new form of work experience -- the remote Externship -- that prioritizes a delightful experience for companies working with young talent. #Internships #EducationEquality #EarlyTalentRecruitment #FutureOfWork #BridgingTheGap #Externships
