As May draws to a close, we’re excited to discuss an upcoming holiday: Pinse. Known as Pentecost in English, it is the third most important Christian holiday after Christmas and Easter, though it inspires fewer cultural traditions in Scandinavia. Nonetheless, since it occurs in spring or early summer, it’s seen as a time to enjoy the improving weather and spend time with family. What is Pinse? Pinse, or Pentecost, falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter, meaning its date changes yearly. In 2024, it is on Sunday, May 19, followed by a bank holiday in Denmark on Monday. Although primarily a religious holiday, many people view it as a cultural event, much like Christmas and Easter. Pinse commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ disciples, a celebration originating from the Jewish festival of Shavuot, which marked the early spring harvest. For more detailed religious history, numerous resources are available online. Pinse Traditions in Scandinavia Unlike Christmas and Easter, Pinse doesn’t have many associated traditions in Scandinavia. However, the long weekend and warmer weather make it perfect for short vacations. In Denmark 🇩🇰, people often enjoy a “Pinsefrokost,” a large meal with family. Many used to gather for a reunion, taking long walks in the woods that ended with an outdoor picnic, celebrating nature and family time away from the daily busyness. In Norway 🇳🇴 and Sweden 🇸🇪, the celebrations are similarly low-key, often involving family meals, typically featuring fish, and sometimes bonfires. Pinse may not be as tradition-rich as other holidays, but it offers a wonderful opportunity to relax and appreciate the beauty of the season with loved ones. What’s the history, how has it changed over time, and what’s the next phase for your place? If Australia’s National Day was ‘Love the Land Day’ it could help draw us closer through a common love of land and common fate. If we don’t love it, who will? If we don’t care and nourish the lands and waters, it will negatively impact the quality of life for all of us. ‘Love the Land Day’ takes us into the spiritual and personal with our individual connection to land, as well as the national arena of caring for country. Most importantly, ‘Love the Land Day’ will bring us closer together, feeling more belonging and pride in our places and neighbourhoods. Be encouraged and encourage others. Beginnings, middles, and ends are part of life. These are all clearly demonstrated in the nature. However, humans have a way of resisting what is natural due to beliefs and emotional attachments, and we can be particularly challenged when it comes to endings. The shelf-life of natural items like flowers and fruit can be perfectly evident, but we might be less aware of this when it comes to other items in the home. The changing of leaves in the autumn can be a metaphor for the beauty that can be found when we let go. I love how Marie Kondo invites us to thank the items that we are releasing from our possession. What a beautiful way to acknowledge the things that we have owned - to have them as gifts rather than as unappreciated soulless objects! The autumn can be a wonderful opportunity to align with nature’s process of letting go of what will no longer be relevant in the period ahead. Appreciating the gift that you have had and are now releasing can make the experience brighter, much like the vibrant leaves that will soon fall from the trees. May we all experience appreciation as we let go of what we have been privileged to own.
