Pretty damning report on UK businesses' response to security breaches via The Register. ------------------ UK businesses' response to security breaches has "astounded" experts following the release of the government's official cybercrime stats for 2024. & "Only a fraction of UK businesses have any kind of formalized incident response plan, which I find astounding," said Andrew Kays, CEO at Socura. "Businesses will always have a plan in case of a fire, but will not apply the same due care for a data breach – which is statistically much more likely. It flies in the face of common sense." & "It's estimated that around 312,000 registered business in the UK were targeted by some flavour of cybercrime in the past year, and 27,000 registered charities – 22 percent and 14 percent of the total respectively." ------------------ Check out our thoughts on SecOps and how we can help you avoid these kinds of issues!! https://lnkd.in/eGwGTkJC https://lnkd.in/epjtz4A8 Xcession Ltd #xcession #cyber #secops

Most people still use 'password123' as a password to their accounts?😳 #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth Day 1 Walk with me😊 let’s talk about strong passwords 👇 STRONG PASSWORDS 📍What’s Password? Password is a secret combination of characters used to verify the identity of a user and it typically includes letters, numbers, and special symbols to enhance security. 📍What’s Strong Passwords? A strong password is a secure combination of characters that protects against unauthorized access by being difficult to guess or crack. Strong passwords are known for being complex and unique. Here are some importance of using complex and unique passwords: 📍Hard to Guess: Using a mix of numbers, characters, letters and symbols makes it tough for attackers to figure out your password. 📍Protect Multiple Accounts: Use different passwords for each account, one hack won’t affect the others. 📍Prevents Easy Attacks: Simple passwords are easy to guess, but complex ones are much harder. 📍Keeps your Info Safe: Strong passwords helps protect your personal information from being stolen. 📍Avoids Accounts Takeovers: The use of unique passwords makes it difficult for someone to take control of your accounts. 📍You also need a Password Manager to help create and store strong passwords. Stay tuned for more #Stay_Safe #cybersecurityAwareness

10 billion unique plaintext passwords LEAKED - Yours could be one of them! "The largest password compilation with nearly ten billion unique passwords was leaked on a popular hacking forum - The file with the data, titled rockyou2024.txt" ~ CyberNews Here are my recommendations to minimize the impact now and for similar future incidents: ↪ Use ONE email for ONE purpose: Use one email for social media, one for educational purposes, one for financial purposes, one for professional uses, etc. It is like segmenting the network, if one is hacked, others are not reached and applying "don't put all your eggs in one basket" :) ↪ Enable Two Factor Authentication (2FA)/ Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) This feature is so important, so try to enable it on all emails, if you do not want, just enable it on the the most important emails - especially with SMS/Biometrics verification - applying defense in depth principle. ↪ Use trusted password managers: We need to use many strong passwords for many accounts, and for sure we cannot remember them all. So, use a good password manager tool to help you in that. ↪ Do not use your main passwords in any online forms / public Wi-Fi: I know that not all of us will use password managers, so at least do not put your main passwords in any online forms, but instead make some passwords for these purposes. ↪ Use strong passwords: Use any long (+12 chars) passwords that you can easily remember and difficult to be guessed - contain capital letters, small letters, numbers, and special characters. ↪Regularly update passwords: Try your best to change your passwords periodically (I will not tell you every 3-6 months), but please when possible, and immediately update them if you suspect they have been compromised. ↪Use breach monitoring services: Get notified when your email is breached by subscribing to this service for FREE. 📌 https://lnkd.in/d9KVtC4u ↪Periodically check if your passwords have been leaked: Check your currently used passwords if they got leaked in any of the past breaches, using this service for FREE - they will not know your passwords. It just tests them against hundreds of millions of real world passwords previously exposed in data breaches 📌 https://lnkd.in/dmFBJc3V ----- I'm Husam, a cybersecurity consultant 🕵️. 1️⃣ For tips and insights on cybersecurity, hit the bell 🔔 on my profile to stay updated, or click the #cybersecuritywithhusam and tap the follow icon. 2️⃣ Share this post if you find it useful 🌹 #cyberdefense #cybernews #passwords #cybersecurity #cyber #infosec #cybersecurityawareness #informationsecurity #leaked #dfir #grc

Happy Friday! This week on #bourbonandbreaches we are revisiting #ransomware. From a report by Sophos some key takeaways about ransomware. The number of ransomware attacks have remained pretty steady over the last couple of years, but the overall recovery costs (excluding any ransom payment) have soared to $2.73M, up 50% from the $1.82M reported in 2023. On average, 49% of an organization’s computers are impacted by a ransomware attack. Having your full environment encrypted is extremely rare, with only 4% of organizations reporting that 91% or more of their devices were impacted. For the first time, more than half (56%) of the organizations that had data encrypted admit to paying the ransom to recover data. The use of backups has dropped slightly from last year (68% vs. 70%) while 26% used “other means” to get data back which include working with law enforcement or using decryption keys that had already been made public. A notable change over the last year is the increase in propensity for victims to use multiple approaches to recover encrypted data (e.g., paying the ransom and using backups). Almost half of organizations that had data encrypted reported using more than one method (47%) this time around, more than double the rate reported in 2023 (21%). 1,097 respondents whose organization paid the ransom shared the actual sum paid, revealing that the average (median) payment has increased 5-fold over the last year, from $400,000 to $2 million. While the ransom payment rate has increased, only 24% of respondents said that their payment matched the original request. 44% paid less than the original demand, while 31% paid more. #hh #cheers Atlantic Data Security, LLC No video today, but in honor of the Kentucky Derby being tomorrow, here is a nice picture of a Mint Julep. :)
