As educators, we spend an enormous amount of time on lesson planning and the deconstruction of reading standards to meet the instructional needs of our students. But- “What about the emotional needs and environment?” Our students need to be in an environment that promotes both academic success and emotional wellbeing. Students that have positive relationships with their teachers and adults at school, often feel safe and secure which allows them to learn and develop. We know from experience that students will often search for a sense of connection with the people they know, and since students spend a large amount of time at school, it is imperative that the learning environment cultivates a sense of belonging for ALL students.
