Amgen’s “Executive Speaker Series” gave me an incredible opportunity to ask Bob Bradway about the “best mistake” he has made in his career. I believe that mistakes are key components of both personal and professional growth. Bob delivered a highly motivational response, which you can read about in this article!
I’m excited to be leading Amgen as we harness dramatic advances in science and technology to serve patients suffering from serious diseases.
Every year, I look forward to speaking with Amgen’s summer interns, and every year I come away from the conversation feeling more optimistic about the future. This is an exciting time at Amgen when both the need for innovation and our ability to innovate have never been greater. To realize the full potential of this moment, however, we need smart, passionate young people who are eager to use their talents to make a big difference in the world. #mycompany

I had an insightful day at the Women of Color in Pharma (WOCIP) Micro-conference on Monday, November 6th. The event spanned from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. MST and covered a multitude of topics, from mentorship and allies to perfecting our elevator pitches. It was truly empowering to hear these people of color sharing their journeys to attain high-ranking positions in their careers. The conference featured enlightening panels with a diverse range of speakers, including experts in mental health, those who've recently entered the pharmaceutical industry, students in graduate studies, seasoned professionals, and specialists who provided insights into what internships are seeking in candidates. The breakout sessions sprinkled throughout allowed us to engage in meaningful conversations. One of the standout moments for me was when Dr. LaToya Coffey (LaToya Coffey, PhD) shared her personal journey, emphasizing the significance of even small job experiences in shaping one's career trajectory. Her story, particularly the doubts she encountered during her PhD, and her mentor's advice to persevere, resonated with me. I've faced significant uncertainty in my own path. However, Dr. Coffey's insights underscore the importance of understanding the greater value of shifting career experiences in the broader context. One of the questions posed to Dr. Coffey that particularly resonated with me was: "How were you able to differentiate between the doubt to persevere and the doubt indicating a need for a change in your career?" This question beautifully encapsulates the essence of self-reflection and decision-making that many of us encounter on our career journeys. Other notable panelists were Dr. Lisa Carlton (Lisa D. Carlton, Ph.D.) and Dr. Joseph Lunyera (Joseph L.) who shared their wisdom on self-discovery, active listening, understanding different perspectives, and career exploration. It's reassuring to know that the journey of self-discovery and career development is a constant process for many, including myself. In summary, the WOCIP Micro-conference was an enriching experience, providing valuable insights and perspectives on career growth, diversity, and self-discovery. The lessons and conversations will undoubtedly continue to influence my career path. Thank you Michelle Adams for this amazing opportunity. You won't believe what happened to me yesterday. It started as a normal day at work, attending the Pharma Exchange event at Genentech with around 50-odd people. The leadership team was sharing valuable insights about the organization. Then, the floor opened for questions. Hesitant at first, I raised my hand, asked what to expect as a summer intern, and sought tips for myself and my fellow interns. The CEO and leadership team provided amazing advice, but that’s not the point. The event ended, and I went back to my desk. Soon, people began reaching out to appreciate me for raising my hand and asking the question. When ten people mentioned it, I realized it wasn’t just those 50 people in the room – 30,000 people had seen me ask that question. How did I find out? I reached out to the leadership panel, introducing myself, thanking them for their insights, and requesting a coffee chat. That’s when a Senior VP responded, telling me how impressed the panel was and that now, I have a network of 30,000 people I can potentially have coffee chats with. To everyone out there who thinks building a network is just about sending LinkedIn invites and having thousands of followers – building a network takes effort every single day. It takes courage to leave an impression in the room. You have to be humble and ask for opportunities. My experience taught me never to be scared or hesitant to ask a question in a room full of people – even if you gain just one good connection or none at all. Always be curious, ready to learn, and ready to adapt. These are the values my Dad instilled in me, and I thank him every day for giving me the courage and confidence to step forward. P.S: Just a fun picture of me and my fellow interns having fun!! Abhishek Dharmashekar Nigar Valiyeva
