Why do I want to help Millennial and Gen Z tech pros take sabbaticals and quit their jobs? Here are 3 reasons: Reason #1: I want to help people like me 4 years ago get "unstuck" 4 years ago I was in a bad place mentally. There were other confounding variables at play, but like many in tech, I had grown comfortable in my job. The ability to come into the office Monday/Wednesday/Thursday from ~10 AM - 4 PM and work remotely the rest of the time was admittedly a fantastic schedule and it certainly made jobs without these options seem significantly less appealing by comparison. As the company evolved from a small startup (I was employee 30 or so) into a larger enterprise, it was clear we needed more engineering support. As it was, I worked many 80-hour weeks (and a couple of extra spicy 100-hour weeks), especially during release sprints and when I was the point man on key customer issues. I should have left during this period, but stayed on, convinced that soon the big IPO payoff would be coming... But the IPO never came, and likely never will. Sometimes when you are too close to a situation, it can help to have another set of unbiased eyes. Reason #2: Many in tech, especially engineers, distrust financial professionals You might think this would be a reason to not choose this niche, and you might be right... But I truly enjoy helping people. It's literally why I'm in this business. If my people aren't going to be helped otherwise, I owe it to myself to try to be that person for them. While I do not expect to single-handedly overcome the status quo in this regard, if I can reach just one person like myself a few years ago it will have been worth it in my book. Reason #3: I'm a huge nerd I spent nearly 10 years of my life as a software engineer. Heck, I even wrote a programming blog. As morning breaks over Coleman Street, it’s time to pack away the umbrella 🌂 for the final time. I’m leaving L&G after over 8 years, almost all of which has been in PRT pricing. And (I’m not the type to avoid a cliché), it’s a day of mixed emotions. It’s a thrilling and fascinating step into the unknown, with a note of sadness over leaving. I’ve spent the last six years building up and leading the quote production team, who have been the engine room behind L&G’s financial success over the years. But much more important than the numbers are the people who make up our business. I’m so proud of how my team has grown and developed over the years. We’ve built a really strong culture, got through lockdowns together and made changes to adapt to a constantly moving market. But we’ve grown from strength to strength. It’s been a pleasure and an honour to lead that team, but I’ve reached the end of the road and I need a break and a new challenge. The slight wrinkle is, I don’t know exactly what that new challenge is. Something that involves my leadership skills, strategic thinking, the importance of people development and a practical and pragmatic attitude. I know I need a good, long break and I intend to use that time to figure it out. So if I reach out to you for a chat in the New Year for some advice, don’t say you weren’t warned! That thinking can begin in earnest in the New Year. Today, it’s time to say goodbye to some of the best colleagues in the business and tomorrow morning, I fly home for a long Christmas break with my parents.
