"Lessons learned from the 2023 Solar Builder Projects of the Year Our Projects of the Year issue is always inspiring in some way. Projects that involve connecting cheaper, renewable energy to lower income communities. Projects that require engineering ingenuity to get done on time and on budget (or to get done at all). Projects that show what’s possible when people actually try to work together to build a more sustainable future. Be sure to read each project story on the Projects of the Year site. Beyond the specifics, we think each of these projects has a broader lesson for industry stakeholders. Here’s what the 2023 Project of the Year winners have us thinking at the Solar Builder office. Collaboration among solar installers will advance the industry more than competition. This is where the collective power of collaboration will win. There needs to be a whole lifecycle approach to reducing the cost of large-scale solar. At Gamcorp , our work in the structural design and certification of large-scale solar systems highlights the challenge of overly complex designs that are difficult to construct, adding unnecessary weeks on-site with no added benefits. Constructability must be considered much earlier, with input from the EPCs proving vital.

"Inefficient UK homes, which were built decades ago, can now do away with their gas boilers and get all their energy needs off-grid by retrofitting a combination of existing renewable energy technologies, new research shows. A study led by Professor Anton Ianakiev, an expert in civil engineering and carbon solutions at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), proves how millions of existing UK properties—which produce thousands of tons of CO2 per year—can become completely carbon-free. The study centers on combining existing insulation technology with photovoltaic solar panels, air or ground-source heat pumps, shared small-scale wind turbines, and shared large-scale batteries and heat storage facilities." #sustainableconstruction #sustainable

Embracing Energy Savings Performance Contracting, the district collaborated with Energia on two successful projects, incorporating plug load controls, oil-gas conversions, and solar PV systems. Eager to expand their solar capabilities, the district partnered with Energia on a third ESPC. Together, they innovatively designed a solar walkway canopy at the William T. Rogers Middle School entrance, showcasing creative problem-solving. As defined in our #sustainability strategy, our Executive Board has decided to take a major step towards achieving the goal of becoming #climateneutral by 2035: Photovoltaic systems are to be installed on roofs, facades and open spaces in order to maximise its electrical self-sufficiency. In an initial potential analysis, a conservative potential of approx. 12 MWp was estimated on the roof surfaces at 15 DLR sites. The preparations for implementation are being carried out by the interdisciplinary #photovoltaics working group under the leadership of the Technical Infrastructure department. Naturally inspired tech design?🌿👀 A leaf-like design for photovoltaic energy capture developed at Imperial is expected to generate over 10% more electricity compared to conventional solar panels, which lose up to 70% of the incoming solar energy to the environment. Taking inspiration from plant leaves, the PV-leaf concept mimics the transpiration process, allowing water to move, distribute and evaporate without the need for pumps, fans, control units and expensive porous materials and generate additional clean water and thermal energy, while adapting to ambient temperature and solar condition variations. “Implementing this innovative leaf-like design could help expedite the global energy transition, while addressing two pressing global challenges: the need for increased energy and freshwater” said Professor Christos Markides, Head of Clean Energy Processes Laboratory at Imperial College London.
