We’re excited to share that Architectural Digest featured Maxon Studio on their latest episode of Unique Spaces!
Maxon Studio, a mobile creative studio in rural Washington, was led by design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, and client/contractor Lou Maxon. The two-story steel tower is mounted on a 15-foot-gauge railroad track and transitions from nested extension of the home to a detached work space.
"You use the tools on your toolbelt to come up with a solution and sometimes even invention," Tom shared. “Invention is a very exciting moment when it happens, but you don't go looking for an invention for the sake of a new idea."

I think kinetic elements are important. We deal with kinetic elements every day. We open a door, we open a window. It's the place we actually touch the building. There's an architect, Johanni Plasma, which has a terrific quote. He says when you touch a building, that's the handshake with the building. It's the most intimate connection you have with the building. So if you recognize that, then you should make it a very special event rather than just a functional event. Give Tom Kundig, owner of Olson Kundig Architects, designer of the Maxon residence. I've built the house for the Maxon family, just a terrific family, Lou and Kim and their three boys. The creative relationship between Lou and I was almost like colleagues. Lou comes with a design background, and so for us it was a conversation, frankly, about what he was thinking, what I could bring to the table, the architectural style at its root. This modern modernism, and what I mean by modernism is it's a rational building style. It's more than style. It's almost like a value is how do you make a building efficient and deliver it in a package that is also beautiful. So form follows function, beauty follows function. In my mind, that's the definition of modernism.

"Even a brick wants to be something.
A brick wants to be something.
It aspires.
Even a common, ordinary brick... wants to be something more than it is.
It wants to be something better than it is."
_Louis Kahn_
From my memories..
Last year, I tried to present an architectural solution to one of the problems of building in slums.
In a public building serving a slum area, the challenge was to create forms that treatm light, ventilation, and the overall appearance, explicitly using red brick and reinforced concrete.

Meet the engineer - Bruno Postle
Bruno is a Designer and Associate Director, based from our office in London, and a valued member of our technical team. In this video he talks about his involvement in the delivery of temporary structures through our partnership with artist Gerry Judah.
"Occasionally we have to come up with entirely new construction systems. On at least three or four occasions we have built things that have never been built before, and to do that we have to write our own code.
For Goodwood festival [_] we have a fixed budget, we have a fixed timescale, and it has to look really good. These are things that are all very difficult to achieve in a construction project, and which is something we have nailed very well over a series of Goodwood sculptures."
