Exciting news in #highered: Purdue Global recently launched their online Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management. I expect this to positively impact students working toward decision-making roles in the industry. This will also help reach licensed pilots who are interested in starting their own flight school, but need the appropriate education and training to understand the operational and financial side of the business. Per Wikipedia: Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) is a combination of theoretical and practical training given to aircraft pilots to enable the pilot to prevent, recognize and recover from unusual attitudes and unexpected situations.
I’ve taught UPRT in both aircraft and in Gulfstream, FlightSafety, sims. It is interesting the difference between how a pilot describes how they will recover in the brief vs how they actually recover. I saw a host of errors from very professional and excellent pilots from all backgrounds. Then you add the physiological and psychological effects of a real aircraft like the Extra 300L my UPRT school operates, and the error rate becomes much higher. I love simulation. Providing the sim has the manufacture’s expanded envelope, you can experience the feel and performance of the specific jet you fly. And the sim is the only way to even get close. An aerobatic jet doesn’t do it, any more than an aerobatic piston driven aircraft like the 10gllc Extra. I don’t recommend a jet sim that isn’t your airplane either. There are too many varieties of flight control laws and stall protection systems. But unless you are comfortable with recovery in a real aircraft like the Extra, or some aerobatic aircraft, the sim training is almost useless. You have to experience upset in real flight to then apply to the plane you fly if you want the training to stick. You can know what to do and be incapable of doing. www.10gllc.com
