ALMOST TIME! NUDGESTOCK 2024 It's just over a week until I attend Nudgestock - the Behavioural Science festival - where this year's theme is Time. Time is a such a critical issue for us all as humans and comes up so much in coaching. I’m really looking forward to exploring what this means for me as a coach, business owner, parent, partner, and friend. To many of us, time is nothing more than a series of moments. But look at it through the eyes of a behavioural scientist and you'll see it holds untold influence: the more we understand how we are shaped by time, the more intentional we can be about how we spend it. Our relationship with frames of time is also really important. In its effort to help us survive and succeed, our mind is always doing three things: 🧠 Accessing the collected and stored experiences of the past to gain certainty and lower risks 🧠 Creating and adapting plans and organising resources in the present to maintain stability and increase the probability of it reaching its immediate and longer-term goals 🧠 Re-imagining the future by looking for possibilities to solve problems and have new ideas I'm really fortunate to be attending in person but the event is also livestreamed free: https://bit.ly/3VUiXr3 I know how I'll be spending my time a week Friday. Viewers are disengaging with your ads, citing repetition (42%), oversaturation (40%), and intrusiveness (25%) as reasons to leave them playing to nothing but an empty couch. 2. How to augment your marketing mix to combat this with In-Scene Advertising, a genre that can't be avoided, skipped or ignored - at a fraction of the cost and environmental impact of traditional product placement, yet just as powerful. 3. Thanks to Kristina Monllos and Digiday for including our own Mark Himmelsbach in a discussion on how brands want to be a part of culture. At Episode Four, we believe that brands can't interrupt culture the way that they always have with with more traditional advertising. It's even harder for brands to make culture (save for great fleeting moments like the Pop Tart Bowl!). Our proprietary RYA data shows us exactly where people spend their free time and extra money. Today's MadeBrave lunchtime chat over a mediocre tuna baked potato: Saltburn, OTT viral-bait and lessons for marketers. I know, just bear with me. Most agree Saltburn is... alright. Fun, beautiful, but not as clever as it thinks it is. Yet it's undeniably been a huge film event, driving debates, memes and streams by the millions. How? It's probably down to just 3 or 4 "shocking" moments. (You'll know what they are.) And they're there for that reason. Proud chunks of viral-bait to drive hits and anchor the film. Yet they could have so easily been chopped by the studio, leaving behind a flat Abercrombie does Brideshead b-movie. *Cue Tenuous-LinkedIn-Marketing-Lesson* Clients, beware of always taking the edge off. So much of the rhythm in creative agencies is coming up with big and sometimes bonkers ideas, and then naturally softening them up with a client until it's palatable. You want impact, distinctiveness, awards or earned PR? Sometimes, leave the bonkers in. Your audiences (and your agency) might love you for it.
