I wholeheartedly agree with the emphasis on 'Governance as a key enabler.' Responsible AI development requires strong regulatory frameworks, ethical considerations, and inclusive policies. While providing free access to AI technologies for all students is crucial, we also need complementary initiatives like digital literacy programs, diverse data sets, and infrastructure support. This cannot be achieved solely through the 'benevolence' of tech giants. I urge all stakeholders – governments, educators, NGOs, and businesses – to collaborate and actively contribute to closing the AI accessibility gap. In 2024, let's make AI education a global priority, empowering a diverse generation of innovators to shape a more equitable future. Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year ! #ntusg #genai

Not long ago, I took on the role of Principal Researcher in the Office of the UN Secretary-General's Tech Envoy, working with Amandeep Gill and the UN’s AI Advisory Body, led by Co-Chairs Carme Artigas & James Manyika, with rapporteurs Ian Bremmer & Marietje Schaake. Earlier today, we released our interim report, “Governing AI for Humanity”. This technology cries out for governance — not merely to prevent harm, but also to avoid its many benefits accruing only to a club of the rich. Critically important, Ann Tey, Lerwen Liu and Shen Yong Ho One of the reasons why I think universities needs to invest in generative AI is to ensure that it is not just the tool for the rich but all students. We also need to ensure that faculty has the means to protect our data and digital identities.

Journalist covering technology / data in the public and non-profit sectors at Future of Good | Data analyst in-training
I first came across Petra Molnar's work at Concordia University's Data Justice Hub workshops in 2023. In her new book, The Walls Have Eyes, she consolidates six years of research about migration management technologies, and the private, state and NGO actors that have vested interests in embedding AI / automation into them. Crucially: how can those on the receiving end of these technologies - often fleeing violence and persecution - meaningfully give consent to the use of their data, when the alternative is not having access to shelter, food and aid if they do not comply? https://lnkd.in/eZPVtgvm

The Centre for #Innovation in Parliament (CIP) is a partnership between the Inter-Parliamentary Union and #parliaments to support parliamentary innovation through improved use of #digital tools. Identifying the need for parliaments and #MPs to have one trusted source to discover #artificialintelligence news, #IPU has launched a new resource dedicated to #AI updates. The potential impact of AI is currently outpacing MPs' and parliaments' efforts to comprehend, legislate, and monitor developments, leaving #democracy, global peace, and security under threat.
