Discussing the importance and role of popularising science through accessible literature at the Gothenburg Book Fair. Moderated by our engaging host Urban Lindstedt, Jan Kunnas and I got to approach the topic through our recent compact 60-pagers, “Skogen, The forest” and “Kvantdatorer, Quantum computers”.   Popular science gives everyone interested an opportunity to get a glimpse into all the different areas in which new knowledge about nature, the universe, humanity, society, etc. is created. This is how we evolve, through new information and new insights. It is beneficial for both individuals and society that more of us have some general grasp of a diverse set of topics. Popular science works – books, documentaries, podcasts – provide the opportunity for all of us to learn something new about an area we may not even have heard of before. Popular science can also convey the fact that humanity is progressing – we have not stagnated, new inventions and new insights are continuously created. In an atmosphere that might seem to be characterised by pessimism about the present, I think this is very important. There is no reason to give up, the future can be much brighter, if we believe in it.   Many thanks to our publisher Society of Swedish Literature in Finland for setting up this discussion, and of course for launching the series of short books on a wide range of topics! This comparison highlights the growing impact of publication demands and the tendency to prioritize expected results over genuine exploration. ⚖️🔬 Insight: While our scientific tools and methodologies have become more sophisticated, we must ensure that the core drive for discovery remains untainted by external pressures. 🧠✨ It’s vital to balance our quest for knowledge with the pressures of modern academia.
