This week on The Nordy Pod, we’re taking a deep dive into an integral part of our business – the Rack. After starting out in the basement of our downtown Seattle store, Nordstrom Rack has grown to more than 250 stores across the country (plus a website and app), where we offer great brands at great prices to our customers.    To tell the story about the history behind our off-price division, Pete talks to Sue Tabor, an early leader of Rack, who was instrumental in expanding our brand and product offering. Sue grew Rack sales by 1,200% during her tenure and helped shape it into the cornerstone of our business that it is today. Then, Pete talks to Gemma Lionello, the current president of Nordstrom Rack, who’s been with our company for over 36 years. Gemma tells Pete about her background, our strategy for the Rack and the work that goes into opening a new store. To round out the episode, Pete travels to our store opening in Elk Grove, California, to speak with customers and employees about why they enjoy shopping and working at the Rack. Join us in giving a warm welcome to the 90 trainees who are participating in our Retail Leadership Training Program! Last week, these individuals embarked on a comprehensive 10-week training program across our stores nationwide, where they will enhance their business acumen, develop valuable leadership skills, and gain well-rounded experience. Upon completing the program, these trainees will step into Assistant Department Manager roles within Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack stores in their local areas. It was an honor to support last week's second annual HBCU Professor Retreat, hosted by ICON360 and Pensole Lewis College in New York City. This event brought together industry leaders and HBCU faculty for solution-focused conversations to advance HBCU students in the fashion industry. On Juneteenth, we hosted the panel "Empowering Student Career Paths: From Campus to Nordstrom," where our HBCU alumni employees shared their personal experiences and discussed recruiting, talent, and networking opportunities. As part of the two-day retreat, we welcomed professors to the Nordstrom NYC Flagship for Industry Day, showcasing various career paths through more intimate discussion sessions with our leaders and employees. The program culminated in a networking luncheon which brought together meaningful connections and conversations between the visiting professors, Nordstrom leaders, and industry colleagues. We're committed to fostering talent and creating pathways for HBCU students and we look forward to continuing building on this impactful work. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Earlier this week, we partnered with the Cut to host the “How I Get It Done” panel at the Nordstrom NYC Flagship. Moderated by Cut editor-in-chief Lindsay Peoples, the beauty-focused panel featured industry experts including PATTERN Beauty co-CEO Christiane Pendarvis, content creator Simi Muhumuza, and Purlisse and YENSA founder Jennifer Yen. The conversation focused on the advice these entrepreneurs would share with their younger selves, lessons learned as they’ve dealt with criticism and failure, and of course, their personal beauty product picks.
