Reflecting on this visit, it's clear how crucial market development is for retailers. Attending ICR this year reaffirmed this notion. Numerous retailers highlighted the strategic significance of opening new retail stores in untapped markets, not only driving in-store revenue but also bolstering online sales. For retail brands, investing in physical stores isn't just about transactions; it's about expanding customer bases. Moreover, it significantly eases the burden of returns, offering convenience, cost savings, and operational efficiencies. In a dynamic retail landscape, embracing retail stores as primary drivers for growth is key. #sleepwars It’s so important to have a strong opinion on how you see the world now and in the near future (we don’t want to get to far ahead of ourselves). Sharing how we see it has been what’s moved the bedding industry forward. Many of our retail partners and over 20 million consumers to date have said “when bedgear makes their move the industry can move forard”. If you consider this for just a moment “if you as a company (I don’t say brand and here is why) are always trying to sell everyone and everything at lots of different price points then you are nothing more then transactions and NOT a brand!” It has always been a focus of ours to have an opinion and find retails and consumers that share that very same opinion. When you connect these dots and create critical mass you can claim you have a brand. What confuses many is advertising spend and the old way of thinking how to value one’s brand. Last year an executive of a large mattress retail opened my eyes to this point. He augured and dug his heals in to claim his private label product was a much bigger brand then bedgear. I asked who is the customer that buys, what does this brand stand for., what solution did you solve for, how did your brand become everyday memorable? He told me everything but nothing with regards to answering these questions . All I heard was how many many millions of ad spend the previous retailer spend building the brand. Fact is a label is NOT a brand and their is always a place for a label. Like Walmart and target or CVS these house brand stand for something, VALUE! The only way to show value is to have a comparison. Without real brands with real opinions creating relationships with like minded consumers their is no ability to become a destination for a product category. I share because I have been fortunate enough to have so many smart people to learn from though out my career. Real retail merchants. Can you make a brand cool again, and is social media enough to do it? An interesting battle over whether Superdry is still cool unfolds between its CEO, Julian Dunkerton, and former chairman Peter Williams, as the fashion chain struggles. In the story, Dunkerton discusses the brand's marketing failures while responding to Williams' comments that the brand is no longer as cool as it once was. He acknowledges that Superdry's marketing could have been more "pinpointed" to younger shoppers, whom it has been trying to draw in by partnering with influencers and stepping up its social media marketing on Instagram and TikTok. Superdry might have once been worn by celebrities, but that was a long time ago. It has definitely fallen into the activewear hole, becoming adopted by an older age group, partly because they wore it when they were younger. Along the way, it picked up the 'uncool' tag. This adds to the notion that it has been a long time since Superdry made meaningful efforts to connect with younger audiences. But does that mean younger generations won't wear it at all? Rival brands like North Face, Abercrombie and Hollister, and others seem to have circumvented that problem to a degree and are able to appeal to a broader audience. I'm pretty sure that if you start with the right product and find the right way to tell a story that resonates with a digital-first audience, you can turn it around. What Superdry must consider is not just surviving the current crisis but thriving in the future by truly connecting with the next generation of shoppers. And of course, the CEO and former chairman are fighting over the wrong thing. Tony stressed the need to curate their private labels to keep current with customer’s taste I believe they need to think more like Netflix beyond product alone since if you can't react in real time to fashion trends you need to compete on something greater Mass fashion needs to bring together consumer interests and the desire for immersive experiences and business interests around a common purpose Consumers want fun, engaging experiences that bring fashion to life while Macys could benefit from additional revenue streams, data collection, and marketing exposure Blending both sides viewpoints is vital - there needs to be value for both sides... Welcome to this weeks #Fridaymusing where I chat about the importance of brand experiences and why, high street brands particularly, should be taking it much more seriously. Earlier this week I posted about what people say about your brand and their perceptions and how you need to be shaping those perceptions through your branding efforts and creating memorable experiences. I also saw an article on Hollister and how they have transformed their dark beach hut vibe stores, into light, airy minimal white stores. Sure their dark nightclub vibe wasn't for everyone but when it comes to branding that is kind of the point. "If you're acceptable to everyone, your will be interesting to no-one" Now they blend into the sea of sameness like most other retail high street stores. Will this change turn things around for them? I personally doubt it. All brands, but particularly the high street brands need to be taking brand experiences much more seriously to entice us away from the simplicity and comfort of online ordering and next day delivery and start visiting the high street again to give us something unique and interesting.
