📰 In Industry news: Europe added a record 4.2 GW of offshore wind in 2023: Europe’s offshore wind industry closed 2023 with record deployments after adding 4.2 GW of new capacity, which is 40% higher than in 2022. Whilst Europe is expected to bring live around 5 GW annually over the next three years, it won’t be enough to meet the 2030 goals. After much uncertainty in 2022, plans are now confirmed for eight new offshore projects totalling 9 GW, including the 2.9-GW Hornsea 3 off the UK and the resumed development of the 4.2-GW Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone portfolio. The Biden administration originally aimed for 30GW of offshore wind by 2030, but industry experts have speculated that we might reach about 15GW. At the end of March, the Biden Administration announced the final approval of the Sunrise Offshore Wind Project. The recent approval follows the Biden Administration’s decision to utilize fewer wind turbines, originally outlined in the proposal, to overall reduce environmental impacts from the wind farm. The proposed Sunrise Offshore Wind Project consists of a partnership between Orsted and Eversource and will be located 30 miles east of Long Island, or 16 nautical miles off Martha’s Vineyard. The offshore wind farm is projected to consist of a capacity of about 924 megawatts and generate electricity for over 320,000 New York homes. The Sunrise Offshore Wind Project is the seventh project approved under the Biden Administration. The Governor of New York has selected two proposed offshore wind projects from the state’s fourth offshore wind solicitation. The two projects that were awarded include the Empire Wind 1 project and the Sunrise Wind project. Empire Wind 1 project is an 810-megawatt (MW) offshore wind project developed by Equinor. Sunrise Wind is a proposed 924 MW offshore wind under development via a partnership with Orsted and Eversource. Empire Wind 1 will be located about 15 miles south of Long Island, whereas Sunrise Wind will be constructed about 30 miles east of Long Island. Both projects are expected to wrap up construction and come online by 2026. The two offshore wind projects will overall assist New York in achieving the state’s goal of adding 9,000 MW of offshore wind energy by 2035 under the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. I had the pleasure of presenting our view on “next generation offshore wind” at Global Offshore Wind in Manchester yesterday, together with my colleague Merve Ece Yigit. Key points: - Offshore wind still has a strong outlook, but some of the market reset is not over yet, and we still see projects being awarded in auctions that are using speculative assumptions, which is a risk for the build-out plans and for the predictability of our sector. - Predictability is not only important for the build-out but also for the supply chain and all partners in the broader offshore wind ecosystem who need to make critical investments in capacity – therefore we once again repeated that our offshore product for now and for the future is the V236-15.0 MW. - Assumptions from the past on product assessments do not work always anymore, and rough guesses are not good enough. - With all the expected project activity and growth in the industry, it is perhaps also time to think about standardization on items like scope interfaces and technical procurement requirements. Good to see we had an engaging audience in the discussion, and that Fred Van Beers, CEO of SIF, stood up at the end of the session to share his view on turbine size and related large implications on their operations.

Installed offshore #wind capacity in the U.S. jumped up from 42 MW in the previous quarter to 242 MW of nameplate capacity in the first quarter of 2024, the Oceantic Network said in their recent quarterly market report. By this summer, it will have another ~4,000 MW under major #offshore installation across three projects. This major growth demonstrates recovery in a previously volatile industry, and the offshore wind industry is expected to play a key role in helping several states meet their goals to decarbonize the power grid and combat #climatechange.
