**👮♂️👮♀️ Bridging Generations in Service & Dedication: Lessons from Two Police Officers**
This week’s open training session left a deep impact on me. As I do every week, I welcomed both past and present TEAM K9 handlers and other professionals to join in. Among the group, I had the privilege of hosting two police officers—one, a retired, highly decorated officer with years of service, and the other, a brand-new recruit just beginning her journey in law enforcement.
At first, it seemed like just another training day, following our usual routine—run the dogs, debrief, repeat. But as the day went on, I realized something profound was happening in my garage. Here were two officers at opposite ends of their careers, sharing wisdom, passion, and perspectives. The retired officer spoke about why he became a police officer: “I wanted to do better. I wanted to serve and keep people safe. It was a calling to make the world a better place.”
Then, the rookie chimed in. She, too, echoed the same values, with one important addition: “I want to help enhance how people perceive police officers, to show that we’re good, humble people dedicated to helping anyone in need, even those we don’t know. I want to make a positive impact.”
This exchange was incredible, not only because of the wisdom shared but also because it reminded me of my own mission in the K9 industry: to leave it better than I found it. Whether it’s advocating for better pay and benefits for K9 handlers, ensuring fair treatment for all working dogs, or pushing for unity within the industry, I’ve always believed we can—and must—do better.
It’s disheartening to see divisions between K9 companies when, in truth, we’re all striving for the same goal: **keeping people safe.** If two officers from different generations can come together to share and learn, why can’t we as an industry do the same?
Let’s put aside the competition and focus on our shared mission. After all, it’s about serving, protecting, and making this world a better place—for us, for the dogs, and for everyone we are sworn to keep safe.
