Last week, I had the pleasure of attending SHRM’s annual conference in Chicago. The event was a powerhouse of networking opportunities, insightful industry knowledge, and expertly curated content. Exhibitors showcased the latest innovations in HR products and services and there was plenty of entertainment to keep the energy high. A highlight for me was supporting my dear friend Dima Ghawi during her compelling presentation on "The Misfit Advantage." Accountability is often seen as punitive when it is actually what helps us thrive individually and collectively. Without accountability, we tend to make up our own rules for success as we think it should be. When we are accountable, we must look beyond our self to see how we contribute to the larger goals around us. This, then, provides an opportunity for us to be even more effective individually in a continual loop. Accountability also builds commitment and engages us in what we do. How do we reach our full potential? Two words that are not normally spoken of together - accountability and potential. Accountable people are intentional about what they need to do and achieve. One of the roles of mentors is to hold mentees accountable to their potential. Potential might be different to the goals mentees come up with originally. What is the word that you associate with when you think of reaching your potential? Mine is creative. When I am in my zone, I am at my peak in creative powers.
