Let's face it...friends at work make work feel less like work. (Bonus: mental health benefits!) A whopping 81% of New Narrative staff reported having at least one work friend in our 2023 all-staff survey. Take a moment on #InternationalDayOfFriendship to celebrate that one colleague who always seems to know when you need a surprise coffee treat, or can make you laugh with just one look across the water cooler. Here's to #friendship! Share this post if you have a work bestie, or tag them in the comments so we can celebrate them with you! ➡ Are you wanting to make friends at work and not sure where to start? Here are some ideas: -Ask a colleague about a photo on their desk or art on their wall. -Follow up with a team member after a high-stakes project to see how they're doing. -Check in with your desk mate: can you bounce a few ideas off of them for their feedback? Sometimes all it takes is a small gesture to get the ball rolling! #OfficeFriend #OfficeBestie #FriendsAtWork #NewNarrativePDX

Managing Director of gloversure. We craft digital experiences that empower vision and ignite action.
Sometimes it’s easy to underestimate the importance of communication - especially in the office. From asking for help to frank conversations about mental health, finding the courage to open up can prove to be a huge barrier for some, and there’s still the outdated idea that asking for help is a sign of weakness when in fact it takes a lot of strength. Encouraging a culture of openness and compassion is vital for our team’s wellbeing. Making gloversure a happier place to work as well as strengthening our relationships. From down days to 4.5 day working weeks, our people-first approach to wellbeing has been a crucial step towards creating an environment where we’re excited to come to work. Our management team is always on hand, whether it’s for a quick chat or a sit down meeting, it doesn’t matter how busy we are, the door’s always open. Thought-provoking Things Worth Sharing - Issue #128 Short Week - Mardi Gras "Think about it: between our always-on work culture, our definition of what marriage or partnership should look like, and the pull of our extended family, who has time to grow real friendships? And yet, how much fuller could our lives be with those friendships? This is why I advocate for more flexible working arrangements. We need the time and freedom to be connected to the important people in our lives, and that’s more than just time for kids. Spending 10+ hours every day getting ready, commuting, and working doesn’t allow for much else, and it might just be damaging our mental health." This and more in the newsletter. #Careers #Workplace #Networking #MentalHealth https://lnkd.in/gGxBiGUr

I recently delivered a beautiful and thought-provoking workplace session for Wellity titled "Let’s Connect: Celebrating Friendships and Combatting Isolation." This session was lovingly created by the incredibly talented team at Wellity, and it was such a pleasure to present it. It made me reflect on my nearly 30 years of work (yikes!) and really dive into my own experiences of the power that friendships play in the workplace. I’ve experienced both positive and negative work environments, and for me, what separates them is connection, trust, and kindness. This picture represents longevity, respect, togetherness, and love. Although I haven’t worked with these marvellous women for over four years, we get together, and it’s like no time has passed—my beautiful ‘Room 20’ friends. Having this type of relationship in the workplace is valuable for so many reasons. It makes us more productive and, for me, more resilient. Above all else, it makes all the hours we work not just effective and creative, but also fun and deeply satisfying. Do check out Wellity’s fantastic range of sessions! Let’s normalise the mental health conversation together, contact me for more information - I hope to work with you soon. 💜 On this #wellnesswednesday I want to talk about reframing situations (or trying to see the positive) and how that can help mental wellbeing in the workplace. 🛋 Last night my daughter said that she was sad that it was getting cold and dark and wet. Instead of agreeing, out of nowhere I said "yes but now we can sit on the couch under a blanket together and watch reruns of How I Met Your Mother" (try it - it's an oldie but goodie) which she was happy about! It got me thinking about having this mindset at work. 😠 A difficult colleague? We don't know what has made them like that. Can we find it in us to remember we don't know what goes on behind closed doors? Or can we take a moment to think about why they affect us so much? Either way, taking a moment to reframe or rethink may help us navigate a tricky spot with someone we are working with long term. 🍜 Feeling under pressure or stressed? Perhaps there is someone you can ask for help. Is there better organisational skills I can utilise? If "Fred" in my office has the same workload but isn't stressed, what methods do they use to stay calm under pressure - I should ask them. I need to accept that I am only human, I can only do what I can do and that I will get through this and be on the couch with a Chinese takeaway (other takeaways are available!) before I know it! 📧 Don't know how to answer an email? Don't understand the content? You don't need to feel like an idiot! There is strength is saying "I don't know". It's not about being humble it's about not wanting to make mistakes. It demonstrates your commitment to want to do something right, it shows you're mentally strong and also it opens up dialogues with people around you. 🌞 And so on this wet and windy #wellnesswednesday I have decided that I am going to try my best to reframe difficult situations that I may encounter in the work place. It's not always going to be easy but I wonder what it would be like if I gave it a shot? #powerofpositivity PS Me and my girlie on the couch!

A Voice for Workplace Mental Health She wasn't scary, but she had been terrified to go into work. People didn't need to be protected from her. She needed protection. The constant stress and fear severely affected her wellbeing and made it hard to function day-to-day. Every morning, she'd wake up with a knot in her stomach, knowing what awaited her. The commute felt like a journey to a battlefield, each step closer to the office door heavier than the last. Inside those walls, she became a shadow of herself – always on edge, always watching, always afraid. Lunch breaks were spent in anxious isolation, dreading the afternoon to come. Meetings turned into minefields, where a wrong word could trigger an explosion of aggression. She'd flinch at sudden movements, her heart racing at raised voices that weren't even directed at her. The worst part? She started to doubt herself. Was she really the problem? Did she deserve this? The gaslighting and manipulation chipped away at her self-esteem until she barely recognized the person in the mirror. Sleepless nights became the norm. Anxiety followed her everywhere – to dinner with friends, to family gatherings, even on vacations. There was no escape from the dread, the fear, the constant state of high alert. She watched her passion wither, her creativity dry up, her joy in life slowly fade away. This wasn't just a job taking a toll – it was an environment slowly poisoning every aspect of her existence. If you've ever dreaded Sunday nights to the point of considering suicide, it's a clear sign you need to leave that environment. Remember, no job is worth your life or health. There are always other options, even when it doesn't feel like it.
