As it turns out, around 21 percent of the titles in Netflix’s report racked up between 50,000 and 149,999 hours of viewing. Sounds like a lot, but with the total list clocking in at over 93 billion hours and nearly 240 million subscribers, it's just a blip. Adding titles below that consumption threshold, we're looking at over 10,000 shows and movies that hardly anyone is tuning into. Do these stats make you think about where, how, and how much your #marketing #content is really being used? Have you been laser-focused on expanding your library to appease SEO crawlers and some mysterious algorithm? Or, have you been trying to create original, informative, and engaging stories that span various assets and formats? Here's the bottom line – it's not just about having a massive library; it's about dishing out content that resonates with your audience. Quality over quantity. The recent Hollywood strikes brought to light the impact streaming services have had on the industry. Streaming has created opportunities for more shows to be produced than was previously available. The challenge for consumers is which services to choose. The cost adds up pretty quickly. Some of the shows I have enjoyed this year. Apple: Lessons in Chemistry, Ted Lasso, and The Last Thing He Told Me. Hulu: Only Murders In The Building, The Orville (Season 3), and The OldMan. Netflix: The Lincoln Lawyer, The Queens Gambit, and Grace and Frankie. Paramount+: The Offer, The Lost City, and Star Trek (Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks) Streaming services have also become home to excellent documentaries. Prime: Reacher, Upload, and Jack Ryan

What will bring the creative jobs back to the professional film and television industry? In my estimate, the *need* for well-crafted, entertaining media (not advertising, not social media dopamine hits) is waning. The *want* is there, but not the *need*. Programming for paid VOD platforms - which fueled the industry for years - has yielded a subscriber saturation point. The allure of working in 'the industry' has given way to becoming a social media influencer (an objective fact; this is not speculative). It's traditional M&E adjacent, sure - but outside of 'the system'. I don't see any new platforms or tech that would draw masses of viewers to justify the mass creation - let alone increase - of net new expertly crafted, professional entertainment. I want to be perfectly clear, this is not a shot at platforms like YouTube. Tons of great content on YouTube. However, often this content does not require the mass of time and teams to create it; and rarely does this work pay a living wage, or have worker protections in place.

Instead of scrolling mindlessly on TikTok, use the “STEM” tab to gain knowledge while being entertained. Use LinkedIn to gain knowledge and information about the field of work that you’re interested in. If you watch YouTube, Netflix or anything else, your illdisciplined.. That’s what a lot of people say and I agree with them. To an extent. Because I watch YouTube quite often. However this depends on 2 main factors to depend on your discipline and persistence. 1). The conten you consume 2). Consumption to production ratio If you are watching sh*t stuff all the time, your wasting your time and falling behind. If you watch something relaxing and normal however you spend most of your time producing stuff or being productive on the RIGHT things, then you’re on the right path. It all depends on how you utilise these applications, the same can apply to social media. “If your going to consume content, you should at least be producing it too.”

A few days ago, Netflix launched a movie called ‘Under Paris,’ centred around a shark in the Seine. While the initial launch post was decent, it kind of flopped... People took to the comments, suggesting funny title alternatives like “Shark de Triomphe!” This suggestion alone accumulated far more engagement, with 75,000+ likes. Most brands might have simply liked or retweeted these comments. But Netflix took it a step further with a stroke of genius, posting: “What we *should* have called #UnderParis, according to the people in our comments...🦈🇫🇷” Alongside this, they created clever fake movie posters for each suggestion. This approach has significantly outperformed the original post in engagement. It’s not just fun and relatively low effort; it exemplifies how leading brands approach social media today.
